front upper suspension bushes £900 What? |
|
just been told that the front upper arm bushes are cracked/splitting, they said they would cost £900 to replace. so i was wondering what is involved in doing it myself, i am not a stranger to using a spanner but is it a time consumming job i.e do the bolts sieze and need cutting ? any comments suggestions welcome

not much help but..
I just had both lower front suspension arms replaced because one of the bushes was worn (failed MOT). £280 for parts, £75 labour. The upper and lower parts are similar cost as far as I can see so you have a lot of labour in that quote. Assume therefore its a massive job?

I have only done lowers, but reckon so long as bolts come undone (being so new they should do) the uppers look an easier job.
Might be worth a second opinion as my front uppers are original @ 13 yrs and 135k.

They're trying to pull your pants down....
The uppers are (in my opinion) easier than the lowers by far.. it's actually quire an easy job, and the parts from AF £140 for a set of upper fronts with the bushes already fitted..
And from what I remember, the front uppers don't require the car to be tracked after (although it's always good practice I guess)
So do it yourself and save ~£750..

Also I would get a second opinion on if they actually NEED replacing..
Generally it's the Front Lowers and Rear Uppers that go.. Disco4 MY16 SDV6 Landmark Black

Chris.
the front lowers and rear uppers - yes sometimes do need cutting, but the front uppers? I very much doubt it, maybe some people have had worse experiences with them as I have.. Disco4 MY16 SDV6 Landmark Black

Uppers should not corrode, the bolts are behind the wheel arch liner.
Just replaced one of mine (other side still to be done), took a couple of hours taking it slowly.
Pretty sure I found some step by step instructions somewhere on the forum, nothing very difficult to do but I did scratch my head for a bit trying to work out how to get spanners on both ends of the bold nearest to the turret - remove little heatshield ,squeeze arm in front of turret and reach around the back!
Good luck Not such a Disco Newbie now!

Hi Chris. Mine needed front uppers, and lowers, and also rear uppers. They were all picked up by Guy Salmon on its last MOT and service. They were not fails, just advisories. The bill came to just under £2000.
Luckily I had Warranty Direct cover, and they picked up most of it except the excess. If I had been paying myself, i'd have been out of there like a shot!

Hi Gareth it was Guy Salmon Stckport that picked up on them at service, i have still yet to have a look my self, but will no doubt have to be done at some point, just going to pick my moment as no garage so will be at the mercy of the weather when i do.

Pentland LR in Edinburgh wanted £1100 to do the front lowers back in May when it picked up on them during a health check! Just for comparison, got them done else where for less than half that.
