Front wheel arch... respray job??? Main dealer issues... |
|
My (new to me) D4, bought from a main dealer has a front wheel arch that’s had a poor ‘smart’ repair.
I viewed the car in the rain (I know that one shouldn’t / but from a main dealer, I’d assumed that any repair work would be of a good standard) - and once I noticed, I took the car back to them to look at / sort.
They said straight away that it was a poor repair and they hadn’t done it but perhaps the previous owner had..they took it to their LR approved body shop to fix. But now I get a call today say they don’t want to do it and they’ll give me £100 to get it sorted myself.
From their POV, they must be worried that it’ll end up even worse / I still won’t be satisfied... but I don’t want the hassle of getting it fixed. Such a poor repair should not have been left as it was and sold on. I wouldn’t have expected a main dealer approved used 35k car to have such a shoddy repair. They agree it’s poor themselves. I’ve learnt a lesson; don’t assume a premium car from a premium dealership won’t have shoddy bodywork that they try to pass on.
What should I do here?

You could threaten to reject it to buy some time or an increased offer. Have a look around the inter web for a secondhand wheelarch in the same colour which will give you a ballpark figure to aim at in settlement.
Did they say what was wrong with it that put them off ? I had a Nara bronze MY11 that the dealer scraped the rear arch and I couldn’t tell that it had been repaired - not until they did it again a couple of weeks later. 2010 MX-5 2.0 Sport Tech PRHT

Different matter if the front wing is damaged, but if it is just the colour coded removable wheel arch, why on earth can't they supply a new one ? Hmmmm; can they order the plastic arches in?? That’s an interesting proposition. I’ll look into it.

I have been lucky to obtain a copy of JLR approved used standards. Because main dealer has fobbed me off with tyre issues your story only makes me want to highlight what dealers should adhere to when selling used vehicles.
The approved standard states that smart repairs are acceptable but paintwork should be close to original finish. Smart repairs should not be visible when viewed from a distance of 2 metres at an angle of 45 degrees.

I understand that unfortunately replacement wheel arches only come ready to be painted. The wheel arch is around £100 (if I recall correctly when I looked about 6 months ago) and add to that the cost of spraying it.
If I were you, I'd price up the wheel arch and the cost of spraying and use that as a starting bargaining position for their contribution. Then I'd go to your local repair specialist with a good reputation and have it done, explaining of course it's not an insurance job, so you don't want to pay those prices!

Give forum member Beanie a shout, he might be able to help with the paintwork if you go down the route of fixing it yourself. Mods:

It is just the plastic arch; not the wing itself.
To be honest; this is only one issue in a myriad of other problems; and their attitude has been very poor so far...

Not clear now if the paint job is the main problem or just the straw that broke the camels back. If they’re messing you about, why not just reject it ? 2010 MX-5 2.0 Sport Tech PRHT

I feel your pain. The 165 point check and the 11 point promise are not worth the paper they are written on. I have my certificate, the 165 point check list, the dealer copy of the approved used standards and still no movement from stratstone newcastle and crc. I'm considering small claims court now. I think they just hope you"ll run out of steam and go away.

Well I’ve been onto Land Rover uk and a case has been opened; looking at the car faults and also, the poor service I’ve reveived.
To be honest I like the car; but without going into too many details; I was told things were sorted to find not one of the issues had been. They think they can waste my time.

I had a paint repair done by main dealer on front nearside arch and had to complain about the first attempt as it was not great so got it done again and was satisfied the second time. It was done under goodwill as It was scratched wile in there possession. (Also as tyres was mentioned in earlier post), I purchased my car and mentioned rear tyres looking like there getting low ish and was told no sir there is loads life left in them, it was going for new mot so I wasn’t to concerned, 1000 miles after purchase it was in for small repair and when I collected the car I was told a full health check was carried out and only thing found was the rear tyres are at around 3mm and we can do you a very competitive price so if want to replace them just get it booked in.. I just thought to myself 40k and need tyres after 1000miles that is taking the urine keep on to them or tell them if they can’t do it you will take it to a body shop off your choice and they pick up the bill. 2015MY discovery 4 se tech with factory black pack.

If you have any legal advice lines with your credit card or through work, it might be worth giving them a call.
Effectively, the purchase of the car falls under the Sale of Goods act, so it should be sold as described and last for a reasonable amount of time. So if the dealer is saying its a Used Car and been through their used car check process and have been negligent in finding the paint defect and repairing it before resale, this then raises the question, what else haven't they done? The flipside to that is if they have repaired it, under the Sale of Services, they are supposed to exhibit "reasonable care and skill" in carrying out the repair, which it appears they haven't.
Write a letter to the Dealer Principal explaining the situation and giving them a timescale to resolve the issue with the paint work, if they fail to respond or do anything, give them notice that you intend to reject the car. 1970 RRC

I have spoken, now, with the dealer business manager and Land Rover UK have a case open. There’s a few things that aren’t right and I simply asked for them all to be fixed... despite it being a waste of my time; I liked the car. It went in and nothing was fixed. They said to bring it in again; I did - but by now, I’m pretty mad; I don’t trust them. They said at this final stage they’d sort the arch and then the next day I get a call saying they won’t sort the arch. Bizarre and frankly, shameful. I wonder, again, how many of the other jobs have not been done. I don’t have time to bother finding out...
Massive shame as I like the car... and I also would have bought from them in future. Strange world we live in when asking for a car to simply be ‘right’ is deemed too much to ask. I said to them; it’s as though I’m asking for a free holiday to the Bahamas or something; or a free Velar! Just odd.
