Front wheel bearing replacement |
|
I read through the many posts about this and every single one turns out to be about getting the hub off - understandably a big issue.
I now have a set of pre-used hubs with the bearings still fitted. How do you get the old bearings out and the new ones in - I've done a lot of Defender bearing changes, but the D3 ones looks totally different.
Any one with pics/advice please.
Cheers from a still warm and rainy Pretoria RSA

The hubs are changed as a complete sub assembly, which is why all the posts are just about getting them on and off.
It's probably possible to strip them down and replace just the bearings, but would need a huge press, and for the cost of the hub assembly, @£100 in the UK it doesn't seam worth it.

"Courier to Africa" = double the cost of the part....
We have a few "TLO's" here that courier in bulk and sell most of the stuff at way lower cost than LR dealers.

Would a Hub Buster work to make the job a bit easier to get the old hub off?

I't's not just a case of replacement bearing for the fronts, you'd also have to re-mould some of the casing.
1600R is only £133 so on a par for costs here.... Bodsys Brake Bible

Did both my front hub bearings a couple of months ago. (Thanks to all who have helped on the site with instructions and torque values, etc )There are two issues - whether the hub has corroded into the spigot - per the Hub Buster video, and also how tight it is on the splines. I managed to get mine off using a standard bearing puller which I borrowed from work - and also by half undoing the bolts holding the hub on, and hitting these with a hammer in turn to 'walk' it off the spigot. I left the socket on the bolts so that I didn't wreck the actual bolts. Turning the steering wheel one way to the other so you can get a lump hammer in helps, as does removing the brake disc sheild.
The new ones I put on were greased up on the spline and spigot to help any future work. One was also a lot tighter on the splines than the other.
I guess ultimately it depends how rusted up it all is...again, one of mine slightly worse than the other but neither were too bad - this is on a ~60k miles, 4 year old car. May be worth dropping the wheel off - having a look and deciding whether to have a go yourself or take it to a willing mechanic.
Hope this helps..... Steve

My experiance of changing them was pretty much the same as Stevea, but I replaced the LR bolts with correct thread spare ones I had in the garege before I started hitting them.
It's not that difficult a job with a few decent tools.
One that's worth noting is that the caliper bolts are not normal six sided bolt heads, so you'll need a multi-point socket to get them off rather than a six-pointer.
My account with what tools are needed is on the second page of this thread.

Thanks to all for the input...
I will buy 2 hubs (doing the discs as well) as I don't know which side is the one with the humming sound (rather wud-wud-wud sound)
I'll be doing them over the Easter weekend on the farm - where all the big tools are
I will also make a similar tool as the Hub Buster.... let you know if I had to replace the whole front suspension....
Cheers

OK, I'm back after the 11day holidays.
I was so psyched up for this job and it turned out to be a 45 minute job a side - from loosening the wheel nuts to the refitting of the wheel.
Both came of very easy and were already loose when I took the 4 hub bolts out. But it seems that the hubs were off before - 2 bolts on the Right-hand side were broken and I had to go find some at the small town of Marken's Agricultural Co-op that only opened again on Tuesday.
I also fitted new disks and shoes. All seems fine now, but I do have a slight shudder under slight braking at low speeds... medium to hard braking is solid as ever...
Thanks to all the input, photos and again Bodsy's Brake Bible!!

Hi
My D3 has about 92000 on the clock.
At the weekend a Front Wheel Bearing went.
Now previously wheel bearings on other vehicles D1/RR classic etc have whined and given plenty warning they were "on the way out".
This one went with a bang. Like a rifle shot!
Anyway I keep a new hub handy so thought easy job to replace.
Anyway the disc will not come off the hub. Blow torch on the disc then cold water on the hub big hammer etc all the usual tricks but it will not budge.
Over the years I have replaced many disc - never found one as tight as this. Usually heat and a big hammer does the trick. Not this one.
Next I tried hub off with the disc attached. But I can't get at the bolt ends with the disc in place to clean and apply penetrating oil to the ends before removal.
3 bolts came out with difficulty the 4th will not budge even with a big breaker bar.
I applied so much torque that a good hex (Tenga) 15mm 1/2" socket cracked.
Went to my local toolshop to get a 15mm impact socket every size in stock but 15mm sold out.
Anyone else had this problem?
Cut the head off the bolt and hammer it off?
Any thoughts on hub pullers.
Help!
Cheers

I’d focus on getting the disc off. Heat it again around the hub, but don’t quench it with water. I’ve had to really wale on the disc around the hub to break it free from rust. You could try penetrant as well.
Once you get the disc off you’ll have a much easier time with the hub bolt. 2008 LR3 HSE, 4.4L V8
