front wishbones

hi can any one help me out i have d3 diesel 2007. the front wishbones bushes lower arms only have been changed to poly bush the orange ones at some point in its life. the problem is there is a clunk coming from the wishbone and the bolt thats in is actually moving in the bush or subframe. so i was going to change the bolt for a new one which also came with the disco. but when i get under the existing bolt looks a lot bigger than the new one i have new one is near enough 13mm and the old one with out taking it out looks to be 16mm which is the right one paddocks say its a 14mm. so thats the first problem then if i take it out i wonder if someone has redialled the subframe to take bigger bolt i could do with some pics or dimensions please so i can see what it should be oh the heads of old ones are 24mm where as the new ones are 21mm

They are not a simple nut and bolt, the bolt is slotted for caster/camber adjustments.
So to remove you undo the nut and NOT the bolt.
The noise will not be your bolt it it most likely the bush shagged.
Polybushs and same style bushes do not have a good rep on on the d3.

If you remove the bolt for any reason you may need a 4 wheel alignment afterwards.

Clunk could also be your ARB bushes as they wear fast as well.

some times if the bolt has been reused at some point when its retightened with the new bush the bolt appears to be tight but can sometimes feel tight but due to corrosion won't tighten fully thus allowing the bolt to move and eventually wear the hole in the subframe oval making it sound like the bush is foofed

when i first got my d3 a "specialist" did the same to mine before i purchased it and i spent ages trying to figure out what the problem was, once i figured it out i put a new bolt in the oval hole expecting it to not tighten up but its been ok for the last five years,i did think i was going to have to either weld the hole and redrill or weld a washer in place but its been ok with a genuine bolt done up tight so far
 please excuse any grammer/punctuation mistakes,i'm thick,thankyou

yep thats what i am getting def the bolt moving but i am concerned they have replaced original size with some other bolt. i need to confirm what size should be in because all 4 are same size also can you remember what is on the subframe for locating the bolt because i now think someone may have ground off the original stops for the washers and welded some on a photo of an original would be helpful

and it also makes me wonder if they have drilled out the poly bushes to accept a bigger bolt so may have to change them

I would get yourself a genuine set of bolts, the cheap ones are no good.
The hole in the centre of the bush should be near enough the same size as the bolt, its possible the wrong size has been used.
The holes in the chassis are bigger and slotted anyway, the excentric washers hold the bolt in the correct postion until the nut is tightened to the correct torque.

With poly bushes the poly part is not attached to the metal bush and every movement causes it to rotate around the bush and can wear away the poly, you only have wear away a small amount and you will start to feel movement in the bush.
This is most likely what you are seeing as it would look like the bush is moving.

If the bushes are worn you might want to consider fitting the HD Meyle arms they will last a lot longer and give a better ride.

they are the guides that the off-centre washer/bolt-head moves against in order to shift the position of the bolt, thus allowing adjustments of the alignment.

Actually the bush itself is meant to deflect, not move or slide but deflect, when it is shagged then it may start moving around the sleeve.
This is why polys are not good news as the susp has such a large range of travel.
