Fuel Filter Changed - Car won't Start |
|
I've searched through the forum but can't find the answer to my problem.
I changed the fuel filter, I've checked the pipes and I think they are on correctly.
I did the ignition on/off three times and also checked that there was fuel at the Schrader valve at the back of the engine but the car won't start. It cranks, it coughs and it stops after a few seconds. Now the battery is really low and it's throwing lots of faults on the dashboard, which I assume is down to the low battery and the excessive cranking!
Can anyone help, please?
TIA

charge the battery and then bleed it again through the valve at the top, some cars you have bleed a lot, but if battery is low it wont start anyway.

Thanks, Flack, very helpful.
It's alive!
I changed the battery, cleared all the faults, bled the fuel through the Schrader valve, there was a bit of air in there, and off it went.
One thing I noticed though was that when I had the car jacked up on the driver's side the fuel pump in the tank seemed to be making odd noises as if it was sucking on air even though the tank was quite full. Lowering it down seemed to solve it.

It only took about a minute in the end but then I had probably bled most of the air out by the time the battery died.
If I was going to do it again I wouldn't try the cranking to bleed method and would just open the valve and bleed it that way. It's quite distressing cranking the thing for ages at a time!

As long as you have the pipes on tye right way switch the ignition on and press the valve until the air stops coming out. Do this three times then crank the engine over until it starts this can take sometime but it will start.
If you bleed the filter correctly after fitting the filter or fill the new filter with diesel you wont have issues next time you replace one

You do not need to bleed anything. The Schrader valve is mainly to check common rail pressure and to check if fuel is actually getting to the rail.
Turning the ignition on will start the lift pump and which will fill the filter and lines - doing this 3 times ensures it is done - any air in the system will exit out the injectors on the actual start process.
Effectively the system is auto bleed.

Yes, Garry I know it's supposed to auto bleed but it didn't work in this case, which is why I posted asking for help.

Yes I appreciate that but I think you had a battery problem not a bleeding problem. The amount of starting you described does not drain a good battery. The running then stopping would have seen any air in the system going through the injectors.
I used to fill to fill my filters with fuel when refitting but found it was not needed. I changed my fuel filter last week and did the 3 x ignition and you could hear the change in the system as the system loaded up with fuel and I had the equivalent volume of air in the system as is in the filter.

It depends on what year of car you have, up to My2006 with the early filter, they need bleeding more often that not, but the My2007 and on can more often than not get away with the 3 ignition cycles.
I have had early ones needing of lot bleeding before they even run ok..never mind start.

If you have air in the high pressure pump it can be very difficult to move, the self bleeding is normally on the low pressure side and the pump without engine running pumps the air back to the tank via its bleed back, hence running the low pressure pump 3/5 times before attempting to start the car, which uses the mechanical high pressure pump to feed the injectors.
I don’t know if it’s possible to bleed the high pressure pump, I would ensure I had two fully charged cranking batteries in parallel well connected, try low pressure bleeding at least 10 times then go to cranking and keep the engine cracking until it starts to fire, keep cranking until the engine takes over from the starter, a little help from easy start may help, I don’t believe in using easy start unless it’s to prove a fuel problem, most strain on the starter is on start up, keeping it cranking is a lot less strain than starting stopping.
It won’t work if there’s another problem ie fuel lines on wrong or electrical, easy start will prove fuel loss, but not reason why there’s no fuel Discovery 3 HSE 07
