Fuel Gauge.. Mind of it's own |
|
My fuel gauge has taken to doing its own thing. Sometimes drops to zero when driving along ( yes I know it does this anyway!!!!) for 5 mins or so and then back to where it was. Sometimes when filled to brim only shows 3/4 full and then wanders to full some time later. Sometimes wanders between 1/4 & 3/4 for no apparent reason. Also get a smell of fuel when I top right up.
This all seems to coincide with me getting rather stuck on a large rock during the Surrey lanes trip. Is there anything obvious underneath that may have got damaged or knocked off I can check before taking it to the stealers!
Thanks in hope!
Richard.
PS What a great machine in the snow!! Went from Portsmouth to Excel yesterday and back this afternoon... Just easy, safe crusin'. Could not be without it! Off Roading is OK.... But I'd rather be Boating!

Hi xtc,
Does your fuel tank protector plate have a dent in it? If so, you may have dislodged one of the fuel sender units. If this is the case, tank will need draining, dropping, and sender refitted (I believe the last bit can be a of a job). Also remove dent in protector plate before refitting (some, such as AndrewS, have strengthened the plate).

check the wiring under the wheel arch - I had the same fault it turned out the wiring from the senders to the gauge was chaffing on the chassis and worn through a bit causing intermittent short.

Thanks Chaps!
Peter, I will take a look when the snow thaws! Thanks...
Good point Taz, did have some chaffing with my rear wheel sensor wiring. Would account for the intermittent bit!
Is that the nearside rear arch?
Digital range also up & down, would make a good video. I would imagine the readout is just a sum using the output from the analouge guage & flow meter. Pain in the though.. Am using the trip odemomometer thingy to make sure fuel left.. Filling up at 250 miles to play safe Off Roading is OK.... But I'd rather be Boating!

Hi fat bloke,
What did the dealer diagnose as the problem on your earlier visit?
