I have the same problem, but it was not possible to change the front sensor without opening amend destroying the fuel tank, I did it and cited the tank, just to test if it is the sensor nor the wiring.
I changed both sensors front and rear, the result: the fuel stand is always the same, half full or half empty. Maybe something stuck, I will open it again.
When you destroy and open your tank, the Engine Control Sign is on. Fuel tank system is not closed or something else is the error code.
I need to replace the fuel tank now. Hope to find one for a 4.4l D3.

Have you considered a faulty guage, I believe you can test with 12 volts to see if it goes up and down

Hello Globetrotter, this might be, but I think it’s not. Before I replaced the fuel sensors the gauge worked. Only sometimes the sensors are not OK and the gauges shows empty while it’s not.
After changing the sensors, the gauge worked as well, but now it only shows half amount of fuel level. Sometimes after filling it up a little more. I think one or both “swimmers” (don’t know the English word, sorry for that) were stuck. I will open and have a look.
Meanwhile I look to replace the fuel tank. It is not easy to find a sparepart, as the V8 models are really rare in Germany.
So if somebody knows where to buy a good, working, used part, please let me know. I’m not allowed to post in Sales area in this forum, I need some more activity (25 answers minimum).
Thank you!
