Just a final update to this now I'm back in the UK, in the hopes it might help someone else....

We filled up at 4 other stations, with absolutely no issues. Definitely was the wrong nozzle, but if you find yourself in a similar situation you need to use the plastic pipe adapter. This is 25mm diameter, so you can use anything thats this size as a funnel.
