Even though my D3 is only a year old, it has done 40,000km. I just yesterday got the dreaded "engine system failure" warning, which is accompanied by a complete loss of power. very scary.
I took the vehicle to LR this morning, expecting the worst, ie. Turbo or something, and after a couple of hours they called me to collect the vehicle. Apparently the problem was a blocked fuel filter.
So, if you experience this error, maybe get the guys to check the fuel filter first before you start panicking.
What scares me is that this means our fuel quality must be pretty bad in some places, so watch out where you fill up.

Hi Baben
Have you replaced the fuel filter after your trip to Kaokoland? Could it perhaps be the Namibian fuel you used? Thanks for the tyre info and the spare tyre lowering tips!!
Regards

Hi JTM
I asked this, and according to LR, the filter would have been replaced at the 24k service, which was a month or so after we returned from Kaokoland. I guess you never know though....
The service manager did recommend we carry a spare on our trips out of country though. It is an easy enough part to replace in the field without specialist tools. I have asked him to prepare a list of essential spares for me, and will share it once it is complete.
Actually maybe someone already did this?

Seeing as I couldn't get hold of the service manager, I spoke to one of the technicians at LR Midrand. I asked him about the list of recommended spares, and he says "whats the point 'cos you are not allowed to fit them or it will void the warranty"
So I tried to explain that I would be in the bush 2000km away from the nearest Land Rover dealer and at that point I wouldn't give a flying about the warranty if I was stuck and running out of water and food, and that it would be in their best interest to help me help them so we can avoid having to truck a land rover around, and anyway how the hell did he suggest we get the damn vehicle out of the bush in the first place, it's not like we have a Samil100 following us...
He says "well you have to return the vehicle to Land Rover for service then we will fix everything under warranty"
at that point I hung up before more of those words could come out of my mouth.
I need to give these guys a map to hang up so they can get their heads out of their
I will try contact a more intelligent being tomorrow.
(Apologies for the venom, but my patience has snapped, never mind worn thin)
OK, let's take a deep breath now
If I ever manage to get any intelligent assistance and manage to get the part numbers, here is the start of my list, obvious stuff like Pratley putty, fuses (including the BIG ones), bulbs, relays, oils excluded:
CV joint or sideshaft front & rear (unless by some miracle they are the same part)
Accessory drive belt(s)
Joints for air suspension pipe
1 or 2 flexible hoses or a generic hose repair jobby
Oil filter
Fuel filter
Air filter (last trip my air filter got a little wet, and woulda replaced it if I had a spare. now I have Snorkel, but don't trust it for water use)
Can't think of anything else?
Brake stuff?

It actually serves you just about right for dealing with the LR 4th team May I suggest you give Waterford a call, 011 658 1445. Speak to Sean there ...tell him I say hi ........ ask him the question and post the answer

I am having a good day
I would not bother with side shafts ........ not a know weak element.
What I would take ....
4 x EP90 diff oil
4 x 500ml g/box fluid
10l engine oil (I use Shell Rimula 15W40 so buy at Shell)
4l anti-freeze
Spare globes for brake/indicator lights
All radiator hoses
Drive belt
All filters
500ml brake fluid
Spare fuses
And most important .... cell number of LR tec on standby at Waterford Yes, I am just paranoid, not plain stupid it seems
Waterford has always kindly supplied me this in a box and I left a check. On return I am returned my money, minus anything used.

The side shafts just worry me because of the tons of sand driving we will be doing - have a look at the latest posts about CV joints giving up in deep sand at high suspension setting & turning
