Fuel tank drop - how long?!

Hi guys. My fuel gauge went so the local Indy is checking wiring and sender by dropping the fuel tank. No probs with that but they are saying it will take 2.5hrs at £75+vat to drop the tank only. Not including putting back up. Seems excessive in terms of time to me....

Thoughts?

I'm sure I replaced my D3 one in less than that on the drive, it really is "just a few bolts and things"

... what I thought. They are now saying I need a new fuel pump at £350. , without dropping the old on or tank. They say the wiring in the fuel pump stops the senders from working...?! Anyone. Advice pls. I feel really uneasy about letting them work on it.

my senders were misbehaving, I bought a complete tank second hand and replaced it for not a lot of money

So, I won't name the Indy, but after not feeling right about the advice I was getting I decided to pick up the car and just pay for the diagnostics and 1.5 hour man time I had already clocked up.

They didn't like it, wanted to replace the fuel pump, both senders and sensors, 5hrs man hours to do it, + parts would have cost £995. They hadn't even fully dropped the tank but were determined that it was that that was causing it, not just a sender. So asked them to put it all together again and I would pick up.

So I paid c.£180 and guess what, fuel gauge is working fine. Done a 100 mile round trip since and it is all good. Hopefully it will stay this way. Fingers crossed.

It’s a known issue with Censored connectors inside the tank. They corrode and break contact

There is a repair kit available, but the tank needed removed to access Thumbs Up

Like Disco Mikey said, the wires from the sensor to the plug corrode / vibrate off where it goes from unsoldered to soldered bit inside the insulation. If you can drop the tank and manage to reach the sensors you can unclip them, open them up and re-solder them. The pain is getting your arms inside the tank

Mine MY11 had the same issue. I dropped the tank on my driveway and wiggled the wires and it worked again for about a year. It then can back. The second time I replaced the tank as they are easy the purchase second hand and as someone previously stated only 6 bolts and 4 pipes to complete the job. Car was on extended suspension so the tank could be removed once on the floor. Axle stands under the chassis for safety reasons. The biggest hassle was transferring the fuel😏
