Just swapped the steel skinny spare for a full size 19"alloy with 255/55x19. I'm surprised at how much tyre I can now see fom the back and sides. I had it up and down a few times (oh er missus), and I think its located correctly, and the winding gear has "clicked". Is this how others appear with a full sized spare. I'll have to wander round the dealers and see if others look the same.
Must say, not overly impressed with the cable being the only attachment for the spare onto the car.

They do look much bigger than the space saver.
I wouldn't be worried about the cable ....it looks very capable of supporting the relative weight ....and I've not heard of one dropping out yet I actually thought it was very well executed ...for both access and ease. 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

Its a great system. Just make sure your in normal road height or at least remove the spare before jacking the car up. You can end up with the thing in extended mode and then the spare won't reach the ground and its a bit of a sod to get off in that position (mmm maybe rephrase that bit )
Personally, when I 1st saw a new model year D3 with the space saver I thought it looked very weird... like something was missing. Suppose it depends on what your used to.
I would also guess the FF spare is better when shunted from the rear too.

I recently had two punctures within 50 yards of each other whilst laning with Slimer. We changed the first wheel using Si's air jack and replaced it with the space saver, packed up drove on a bit then had another puncture on the front.... ...this time I used the D3 jack, which I must say was a doddle even on rough ground, had to put Si's MTR 19" on ...the motor looked deformed with three different size and styles of wheels
Moral: Get yourself a full sized spare - don't go laning alone - don't drive on a flint peppered lane with road tyres on Cost £280 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

Leave car at access height in unknown places, make it trickier for them!

I cant see how you'd get at the cable with the spare in its mounted position, if you know what I mean.
Also, as I have the multiheight towbar, I did put the suspension in off road position to be able to get the wheel out under the back. Cable length was OK.

From memory U could always just cut the bolt head at the end of the cable, then the wheel & bracket would just fall down???

In off road height there is a chance the thing gets confused and goes into extended mode... happened to me at the tyre changing place... they jacked up the the rear from both sides (to do two wheels at once) and she went into lanky mode... cable left the (un-used) spare dangling when they lowered it to change it to the better of the used wheels.
Had to re-jack as well so they could put the wheels back on... very funny to watch.
I think they used the suspension arms as jacking points rather than the chassis (or the other way round).
