Fumes - Question for the experts

I have recently begun to notice a smell coming through the air vents when restarting the D3 after the engine is hot.

The smell is like burnt oil or exhaust fumes and last a couple of seconds.

It does not happen on initail start up and not always when restarting while engine hot but often enough to be of concern.

Any suggestions greatfully received

Sounds like fumes from the Fuel Burning Pre Heater kicking in and being drawn into the cabin, the mornings are cold enough now to trip it. There is a tech bulletin covering this so the dealer should sort under warranty (if car under 3 yrs old)

Any signs of oil leaks?
Take the plastic cover off (take out the oil filler cap and it simply pulls of upwards) - could be oil finding it's way on to the manifold(s)
Have you put oil in it recently - did you spill any? - sorry if that is a numpty question, but they are not the easiest to top up withiout spilling it

CFB - unlikely the FBH would kick in when engine hot?

Agree the FBH shouldn't kick in when hot but the symptoms/smell sounds just like that

In cold conditions
It will kick in to keep the engine hot even if the engine has been running for some time. For instance a long run then a stop - go in traffic the FBH will engage.
In the Beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

Thanks for the initial suggestions gents.

The FBH was replaced last year (under warranty) I will monitor to see if it cuts in when engine hot.
Just checked , no signs of oil under any engine covers or under vehicle.

Will continue to monitor to try and find source.

This could be a long shot, but have you had any work done on the braking system lately? Maybe a new brake servo or master cylinder.....

Dealers are not always so careful about not leaving hydraulic fluid all over the place and this stinks when it burns off.....

You probably wouldn't notice when you first start the engine from cold or whilst driving, but if you leave it parked up whilst hot, when you return, the air-con system will suck up the smelly fumes as soon as you restart the engine...

Just a thought Thumbs Up

You mentioned exhaust fumes which is why everyone is rightfully questioning the FBH, but burnt oil smells different so this is the only thing I can think of....
