Off thread...

My daughter took friends ice-skating for her tenth birthday. I asked the leisure centre whether photography was allowed: it wasn't, unless by an 'authorised photographer'. How do I become one of those, I asked? One form completed at the ticket-desk and I was given a big badge saying 'authorised photographer'. Before you could say 'stylophone' or 'let me fix it for you', I could have taken photographs of anyone. Hardly a robust system!

(I think this has earned a place as a new thread?)

The logic is that they then have your details if there are complaints. Had same problem years ago at a swimming pool party for our eldest (he was about 9 at the time) ... i just said if no photographs were allowed, I would have been told so when I booked it.

Sadly, we now have a generation of the completely innocent, many of whom are now terrified of doing anything around children, for a fear of misinterpretation or misunderstanding. I find that one of the saddest developments of the last 20 years or so Sad

Imagine what the next generation will be like, having grown up largely having been taught to fear everyone and having little idea on how to constructively relate to strangers all by themselves.

Rant over!

Oddly I'm in the position where I own a children's nursery and a chain of breakfast, afterschool and holiday clubs where Ofsted control how everything is done such that its almost oppressive. Flip this around to my kid's school. Its a private school that has safe guarding policies but they are realistic and based on common sense. We have no issues re photos or gaining access to the school etc.

There is a happy medium that doesn't prevent parents taking pictures or engaging with the school and other kids, however, there is such a fear factor out there that the easy option is to default to the maximum in the interpretation of what is required in child protection.

Its the same as exposing kids to risk. My kids know and understand risk because they have been deliberately exposed to it in various situations, but there are too many cotton wool helicopter parents that just instil fear into little Jonny and Jane that they are un prepared for the real world. The litigation culture we have acquired from the Yanks is to blame. No one wants to let anyone do anything for fear of being sued due to some outcome or other.

No photos - in case we're sued by a money-grabber when their child is photographed accidentally
No conkers - in case we're sued by a money grabber when little Jonny gets hurt.
No anything - then we can't be sued.

How many lives shattered. How much blood will spill, until everybody does what they were always going to have to do from the very beginning: SIT DOWN AND TALK!"

It doesn’t have to be this way, I was chair of Governors for 8 years at a Primary school, you just use common sense and explain to parents. Our kids at the school still climbed trees had snowball fights etc all the things they “aren’t supposed to do”. As Moo says kids have to learn about risk and how to evaluate it and deal with it. We cooked over fires, lit fires, camped, built dens etc. The sad thing is, it is so often apathy that stops parents and schools not rules and regulations.

I know it’s tough up north but are you saying there is a safe guarding issue around dogs? Shocked
