Didn't spot it in the article that prompted this discussion but I reckon the aim was to create a mould of his head so he could make a bust of himself?
So in that context it's not as stupid as it looks, they just hadn't considered that any irregularities in the cube shape would make extraction difficult.
It's also a good job they didn't use plaster of Paris as it would have burnt him ... Probably to death..

Some forward planning went into it as they put a plastic bag over his head first to stop the foam sticking to him and provided him with an air tube. You would think with that level of planning they would have noticed the microwave was an irregular shape.
