These two links on Which are useful and what I used.

This ones explains types of Gap insurance:

https://www.which.co.uk/money/insurance/ca...headline_4

This link gives a number of comparison quotes from different companies. I tried quite a few to get the best 5 year quote. On a new car many insurers provide this as standard for the first year:

I have just got a quotation for Return to Value Gap Cover Insurance from Warranty Direct for my Landmark. They value the car at £37,166 but the cover has a claim limit of £40,000.

The quoted premiums are:-

£185.34 - Cover for 2 years

£201.10 - Cover for 3 years

£258.50 - Cover for 4 years

I don't consider that too bad, but have yet to shop around.

I'm going to see if I can get a discount if I take out an extended warranty at the same time.

And to think if your car got stolen in 4 years time that £260 could reimburse you £20,000 or more

So I am lead to believe, where's the catch?

They never asked if I had made a claim for vehicle theft, or written a car off, which I find strange.

The answer is no write offs, or other insurance claims, save for storm damage once.

One car stolen, in the mid-60's a 1275 cc Mini Cooper S; recovered after insurers had paid out.

Thanks all,

So take ALA. they offer Invoice Plus or Vehicle Replacement Plus.

They only bonus i see for the vehicle replacement plus is that it covers you if the cost of the car rises?

Am i missing something? Thanks Thumbs Up

If the car is new and you get a really good deal with decent discounts etc. Then vehicle replacement is the way to go as it will payout the difference between your insurers settlement and the cost of actually replacing the vehicle in the future.
That was what I did with the Mrs as we got £7k discount off list price of her new car as we caught a dealer looking to shift tin at month end.

My policy covers the greater of the price to invoice or replacement car whichever is greater. As it was explained to me, prices of cars rise and then you find you can't purchase a replacement for the original invoice amount. This is especially the case the more years the policy is in place.

What do they pay you when the car is no longer made so there is no "replacement" car available and neither is there a replacement car value?

That's covered in the policy.
" A vehicle of the same make, age, mileage and specification as the insured vehicle when you bought it. If the model is no longer available then the price of the nearest equivalent vehicle will be used"

Got it down to ALA, Gapinsurance.co.uk or DirectGap

All within a similar price point. About 50% of what LR charge. Leaning towards ALA Thumbs Up
