Garmin or Tom Tom?

Looking at replacing our Tom Tom satnav as it's so slow to acquire satellites (but is this due to the heated windscreen?). Seriously thinking about Garmin (cheap basic model) but is this a good move?
BTW we don't have mobile data so won't be using a mobile phone.

I have Garmin in my car and on my bike, both superb, most come with lifetime updates now, never had Tomtom so can't comment.

I have had a couple of TomToms, and more recently a Garmin Nuvi 2659 LM.

The Garmin is excellent, but when it was just over 2 years old the battery failed.

Halfords who supplied it asked if it was plugged in "all the time", to which I replied "Of course" - their response was, "Well that's why then".

A replacement battery from:-

http://repair-my-device.com/

cost £29.99 + postage, vastly cheaper than Garmin's quote.

I am, as you might expect, pretty Censored off with Garmin. However I would probably buy another, unless the market changes dramatically.

Certainly the standard LR offering is pretty useless compared with Google, Waze, Garmin or TomTom Evil or Very Mad

I use Garmin Nuvi 50. It is expensive but ok, heated windscreen is not a problem.
Never used TomTom, but that is only because I have been using Garmin since the 1990s (Garmin GPS III +).
Software glitches sometimes occur with my Nuvi, nothing catastrophic but not confidence inspiring.

As functionally they seem to be much the same, you should test out both in a shop to see which of these suit you better in terms of handling and visual cues.

Wont be your heated screen, you just need to re-set the Tom Tom and all will work ok.
[had this happen to mine and all now works well after re-set]

1. - Soft Reset:
Press and hold the On/Off button until you hear the drum sounds and the device restarts. This can take 30 seconds or more.
If the issue persist please restore the software on your device(Recovery Mode)

2. - Factory Reset:
Recommended: To take backup of Favourites before Factory reset as they will be deleted in the process. Please find the below link that will guide you:
How do I backup and restore my Favourites? (MyDrive Connect)
- From your Main Menu of your device, tap Settings option.
- Click the right arrow key and navigate till you see Reset Factory Settings.
- Select it and click Yes.
- Select Full reset. (Note: It will delete all your settings and local data).
- While doing the factory reset, when prompted to select a language, perform a soft reset on your navigation device.

Hope this helps. Thumbs Up

BTW - Currently got both a Tom Tom & a Garmin and Tom Tom for me is the best [even including my LR D3 and D4 sat navs, wife prefers it too to the one in her car]

++1 here also..

I now mount an ipad in front of my screen on a ram mount rail.

The ipad handily has google maps, which are far far superior to any satnav I have ever owned - and spotify and also google functions to hand, which I have found handy many many times where I need to look something up.

As others have said, data is so cheap these days it's unreal.

ETA: Another convenience of a mobile device used in this way is that you can plan your own route in the comfort of your home or office in advance. It also "remembers" where you have been between devices, so where I use my ipad in one car and then swap to another car and open up my phone on the dash - there is all the history.

D3 07 HSE - gone to car heaven
FL1 - gone to Romania
D3 05 HSE - gone to a divorce diet
D1 V8 manual - gone but not forgotten
RR Classic - gone to car heaven

Jeeps, Lexus, X-trails... Too many to name..

I had a Tom Tom for years, really good. Then bought a Garmin with traffic and free lifetime map updates. Great !.....No, it is impossible to get the map updates because the Garmin update software simply does not work. I did read somewhere that they are in dispute with someone else regarding software.

Apart from that part the Garmin works really well. Got a really cheap North America micro SD card for it and used it on holiday. For some reason micro SD's for other countries are really expensive.

Don't use it in the UK because the Disco version (updated) is fine.

I will tell my experience....and that is that I always do my updates, for life, on my Garmin nuvi 2798LMT both the software and maps all over Europe and I have never had a minimum problem with these updates, and I do at least 2 a year
