After a long drawn out fight with the dealer trying to get them to solve the juddring at the 1500-2000 rev 30mph issue, "sorry mate we can't find anything wrong with it", "the EGRs require replacement that will sove the problem".
I decided to pay my local specialist to flush the gear box out and recalibrate.
Hey presto problem gone.
This now leaves me with a question after the dealer couldn't be bothered to look beyond their computer fault finding, this is clearly an issue within the D3 world, does anyone know what LR recommend for the milage change of this oil? I can find nothing in the manual that suggets it a requirement.
The next question is clearly the oil has degraded over time, if LR haven't stated that would this be in the realm of warrenty issues?
Any info would be useful

i dont think there is a recommended mileage - it all depends on what sort of use the gearbox has had. mine got done around the 80k to 90k mark i think, others have had it done a lot sooner and some not at all. Duncan

I had a rumble from the gearbox when towing - my dealer :-
1) reproduced the rumble with a 3T trailer attached
2) changed the tyres and reproduced it again
3) then went straight to suggesting a Gearbox flush
down to dealer experience i guess Duncan

Hi, I had the rev hunting problem as well, which was fixed after a gearbox filter replacement including a oil flush. It cost me around €1200. /Joan

I suppose it does rely alot on their experience however I'd have thought being a LR MD it would have been common knowledge with in the group, the dealer claiming to be a large dealer.
Not wanting to bad mouth them but on here but I'd never recommend them to anyone clearly customer service/satisfaction is not their strong point

My experience of the dealers approach to fault finding has been variable - on some issues they have been excellent and then at other times they've just made things up that are clearly not true (for example, that the fuel burning heater exhaust won't always get hot when it's running!).
I'd be happier with them saying that they don't know but that they'll go and find out from people who built the car in the first place!

Some have opted for a 'mega flush' which is basically very similar to a dlyasis system, it circulates the fluid through a machine that relaces it with new, and reportedly replaces up to 97% - a standard dealer type drain and refill will only change around 47% of the fluid
This avarages at around £150 - £170
Look at http://www.megaflush.4-tech.co.uk/megaflush.html for more info Never get mad - get even !!
06 D3 now gone to family member and still going strong at 265k
previous vehicles:
04 D2 TD5 - (clocked 189k from new)
52 X-Trail 2.2 SVE
various euro boxes !

However this all sounds like its a very well known problem with High mileage Auto boxes.
As you can imagine after forking out nearly £800 and spending a lot of my time trying to explain to "engineers" that there is a problem with the drive and getting the look from them that I'm taking up their valuable time and stopping them drinking tea I'm a little irritated.

All oil degrades - that`s a fact.
Having been involved with auto boxes for many years, and learning an awful lot from the guys over the pond, I wouldn`t leave any auto fluid longer than 25k without a change, don`t care what the manufacturer says.
The main aim of so-called filled for life transmissions is to give the customer the false impression that his servicing costs are lower than they otherwise may be. Over the model life many drivers will either not notice the faults present when driving or just put up with it, so the manufacturer `gets away with it`. The boxes that go bang are repaired either under warranty (if lucky) or at great expense to the end user. All this for the sake of a bit extra at every other service.
Like all servicing, if carried out properly, a full auto box flush will prevent the driveability problems and extend the useful life of the transmission. The old adage: prevention better than cure, applies here more than most.

Agreed however if the manufacturer does not state that this is a required maintenance then surely they are providing equipment unfit for purpose, which goes back to my last point that in theory its a warrenty issue?
