Gear box stuck in drive
Just got home from a hard days work, switched engine off and the rotary knob is stuck up in D, I’ve only driven one mile from where I’m working.
Iid tool is showing no faults, Iid reset no difference, I can’t start the engine because rotary knob is not in park, any help would be grateful It can when others can't,

Not really only consolation, it is stuck up in Drive, can’t start the engine because I can’t select neutral, can’t move the car and it’s blocking my other car in.
What is the P/N wire mentioned in the other post?- is it the colour of the other post.It can when others can't,

Turn the ignition on without starting the engine. Then turn it off again. It should realign to Park. Alternatively, if it's up with the ignition on, see if you can rotate it back to Park.
There should be a fault code for the GSM.1972 Range Rover Classic 2 door V8

Tried that, it is stuck up in drive and will only rotate very slightly, done Iid reset, hard reset, no faults logged.

I’ve heard of bits/things getting wedged down the edge of the knob. Given you have no codes, could it be that? If so would a Vacuum cleaner , brush or some such get it out? Ni experience of it, just read about it on here. Just a thought.
Good luckGary

If you lift the cup holder, isn’t there a red lever below it you rotate to be able to move the gearbox to Neutral?Bodsys Brake Bible

Not sure if it will help as you are stuck in drive its From manual :-
To activate the Transmission park release mechanism, carry out the following:
1.Remove both cup holders and the cup holder trim panel.
2.Pull the strap until the Transmission park release locking mechanism is accessible.
3.Turn the locking mechanism 90° counter-clockwise.
4.Use the strap to pull the Transmission park release mechanism upwards, until it latches in the vertical position.
When the Transmission park release mechanism is activated, the gear selector will remain in P, but the selector indicator and the Instrument panel will both display a flashing N.
When vehicle transportation has been completed, the Transmission park release mechanism will need to be deactivated. To deactivate the Transmission park release mechanism, carry out the following:
•Return the Transmission park release mechanism to its flat (folded) position.
•Turn the locking mechanism 90° clockwise.
•Return the strap to the flat (folded) position.
When the Transmission park release mechanism has been deactivated, refit the cup holder trim panel and both cup holders.

I’ve carried out the above with the lever, but all it does is put the transmission in neutral to allow the car to be moved.
I have removed the rotary knob and there is nothing visible jamming it, it just rotates about 2mm in either direction, still stuck up in “D”. Engine will not turn as it says “ not in P” or word, to that effect.
How is the rotary mechanism removed?- from above or underneath. Does the chrome surround clip off?
All help appreciated, as per usual I had got an urgent job to do today It can when others can't,

I know it sounds daft, but check the wiring to the transmission under the car there is a wire that goes from the TCM to the shifter which tells it that the transmission is in Park allowing the shifter to auto rotate to P on power down.
Do the lights come on on the shifter when you turn the ignition on?
The transmission will be in Park, but the shifter is misaligned.1972 Range Rover Classic 2 door V8

Well after a day of frustration the goal posts have moved slightly, It is now stuck in park and the rotary knob rises on start up, falls on stopping, I have put the suspension in off road height and wil try and find this wire you speek of.
Iid tool still says "no faults", I say come back the D3 with a proper gear lever all is forgiven.
£400 for a tool that does not do what is expected of it and a car that cost £68k 3 1/2 years ago that I can't move, eaves one a little peeved off.

Did you try and do an "advanced" diagnostic fault read? I believe this reads unconfirmed faults.

The stop/start switch seems to be operating ok
It’s the selector rotary switch that is not getting a signal to unlock, I can now start ok and the rotary knob rises, but is locked in the park position.
The conclusion I have come to there is a fault somewhere between the Transmission control module(wherever that is located) and the selector mechanism or one or the other is faulty. Brake switch must be ok for the engine to start.
