Gearbox drain plug leaking on 8 speed
Has anyone had issues with aftermarket 8 speed sump drain plugs leaking? Had a smell and found oil on the exhaust crossover pipe. It’s tight but seems to be leaking! Great.

How can oil leaking from the drain plug get onto the cross over pipe?- I guess the oil is coming from elsewhere. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

The small exhaust pipe that comes from the right side turbo across to the main system. It’s defo the drain plug leaking. Was a new filter pan from maltings. Annoyed it’s leaking as that’s a pain to replace.

Hi,
These seal on an o-ring so it is likely the o-ring is not seated correctly or is damaged.
Unfortunately the only way to check will be to drain and re-fill.
They do always worry me as they are only tightened to 8 Nm but I've never had one leak.
Hope this helps.

More likely it hasn’t even got one, my plug is different to that as the “O” ring is bigger and stuck on and the flange is bigger, it doesn’t come up to the threads.
Only one answer drain the oil out and check. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

Cheers all. I backed it off a bit and retightened. Cleaned it off and so far it’s ok.

Good news, fingers crossed it stays dry.
There are two different sized plugs as my 2012 L322 has a smaller sized threaded section but my 2016 D4 has the wider thread.
Not sure when they changed over.D4 2016 Landmark, Waitomo Grey.

Hope so! After having the body off and doing engine swap plus all the other jobs not what I wanted! Just got a bit of a smell after a run which I think may be the crossover pipe heat blanket. Hopefully it will cure and stop! Fitted a new stainless crossover but reused the blanket off the old one.

If it still leaks and you can back it off try putting some PTFA thread tape Round it, it’s what plumbers cause to seal joints. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

Interesting... I would never reuse a plastic plug. Now that I think about it, I never reuse the pan as I always change the filter when I change the fluid.2015 LR4 HSE Lux Aintree Green
