I am going to change the gearbox oil and filter on my Discovery 5 and just gearbox oil on my discovery 3, the problem I have is I don't have a diognostic tool and you need to know the oil temp to get the correct levels and insure the oil cooler is primed. Is there a cheap diognostic tool that can do this or is there a way to read temp with out one. I do have a thermometer with a probe on a length of wire, I could put this in through the fill port but I know this will let oil out and be messy.
I know some diognostic tools won't work on my disoc 5 as the local Halfords couldn't code a new battery with their tool and had to send me to another branch with a better tool and thus I'm seeking advice before spending any money.
Thanks in advance for any help
