How to get better MPG

Just moved back into the world of LR after being in the wilderness of BMW & Audi. Had forgotten how thirsty the LR can be, so please help me with any ideas, suggestions, tricks to keep it near reasonable. My trusty steed is a D4 MY14 Automatic and I love it . My typical journeys are a mix of short runs into town and motorways.

Any ideas regarding but not confined to:
Tyre pressures, cruise control, warming engine, gearbox mode selection, etc etc will be much appreciated.

This type of thread always flummoxes me a bit to be honest. If MPG is of concern then buying a 2.5 ton brick with permanent 4wd, a 3ltr V6 twin turbo engine and an automatic box really isn't the best choice. They're thirsty vehicles, simple as that, I'm afraid there's not a lot you'll be able to do that'll make a jot of difference in reality. Just drive it and fill it up when it's empty Thumbs Up

Know what is normal and don’t expect to save the planet. For me (MY 11 & 6 speed auto) 18mpg around town, 31mpg cruising at 60mph and 27mpg cruising at 75mph. Good bit less when very cold, more when hot. From your mix (depending on mway speeds) I’d expect you to average 26 - 28mpg(ish).

Re saving fuel, I find branded fuel rather than supermarket helps (made no difference in my D3 but seems to help in D4) and keep it slow on the motorway. Thumbs Up

That pic was coz the gearbox selector cable fell to pieces in NE Finland last summer, a week later the engine packed up in NW Norway and she was screapped. Sad

We are all truly mad for still driving them!! Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

Keep it basic too. If you fit a RAI, A-Bar, Front Runner Rack, Sump Guard, etc. you'll end up with consumption like mine! Shocked

I did a good motorway stretch the other day (80+ miles each way) and was at 70 the whole journey...managed 23mpg!

Strangely when my RAI came off and wasn't refitted it didn't make any difference to mpg for the final 6 - 7k miles when the car was like that. Nor any difference in noise, just lots more water streaming across my driver's side window in the wet.

I agree but its like an addiction, I cured myself for 5 years but have relapsed again, don't think there is a cure. Rolling with laughter

I'm sure it's not the RAI's fault. The sump guard and rack are heavy beasts and do little for aerodynamics.

The wife will kill me if she reads this, but I thought it was funny.......

I fitted a long range full tank, so now carry approximately 160L of diesel, so the distance we can drive has significantly increased over the standard tank.

The comment from the wife and I kid you not, was......."Wow, we are getting a really good fuel consumption, as we can drive further now".... Shocked Shocked Laughing Laughing

So by that logic, fit a long range fuel tank and you'll get a better fuel consumption. Laughing Laughing

This thread suggested a mechanical solution, but there doesn't seem to be anyone who's tested it on here for real.
