Getting engine into the boot of a D3.

I'm off to pick up a 'project' car with a spare engine at the weekend, prefereable carrying the engine on the trailer with the vehicle. I don't know how it'll be presented, so will be taking a pallet and straps to secure appropriately.

Alternatively, I could try to stick it in t' boot. The weight isn't too much for the car at around 250kg, but I question my sanity in tryng to lift it between two or three of us without causing damage to something or someone.

Does anyone have any suggestions to make it feasible? Is an engine hoist an option? I might be able to borrow one, but don't know if it'll give me enough clearance and reach to get it past the tailgate. I've got a bike ramp which should take the weight - or even use the trailer ramps. But then the weight will be on the odd-shaped tailate.

Suggestions please Very Happy

I transported an engine from York to Dundee (think it was for Disco Mikey) in the back of my D4. I recall that we got the palletised (is that even a word...?) engine into the back using brute force and several people (was three or four) and a lot of grunting. It is possible but shallow ramps or a forklift would be a more HSE friendly way to do it.

I collected an engine for my MGB GT V8 on a pallet loaded with a forklift, unloaded by 4 of us.

Thumbs Up

Thank you both. Certainly my son eats for two - perhaps he can lift for two as well?

Ran out of space, with too many spares filing up the boot, loaded into the car and also on the trailer with a spare door on a pallet strapped to the back of the trailer - so it'll be a challenge for another day! I think I'll use a smaller trailer and a hoist to save backs, toes, fingers and swear-tin payments Thumbs Up .
