First impressions after a whole 20 miles and one school run...
- engine 'burbles' more than 2.7 at idle/low revs. Definitely sounds as though it means business
- cornering vastly improved without compromising the ride; in fact I think the ride is better over the evil speed tables near us
- I like the almond and arabica, kids don't (but they wanted black cloth like the last one... perhaps I should compromise with some suitable seat covers?!) Especially with black paint, I think the ebony leather would be a bit dark - in the showroom, the ebony interior certainly seemed a lot darker than the old one
- whole touch screen thing is FAR better than iDrive in MrsR's 5 series
- sat nav is also streets ahead of BMW offering
- iPod integration is very good, shame it won't charge the iPhone (supposedly working on a new lead for that). I've actually just stuck my old iPod Touch (which does charge!) in in the cubby box for music, with the iPhone on its Belkin stand so that a) it charges b) I can see it! c) I can listen to pod casts using the Aux in as before
Odds
- sharkfin aerial is lower - barely higher than roof rail tracks
- the exterior colour's gorgeous, but already I can see it's going to be a b*gg*r to keep clean
- voice control button doesn't seem to do anything! Because LR's manuals cover EVERY model in one, it's hard to tell if this is by accident or design. "Only" having XS I didn't expect voice control of audio system, but did expect it to work with the phone. Will raise that with the dealer when it goes back to have the long roof rails fitted
Martin
PS I liked the Wirral when I looked at moving that way - was just a bit put off by what would happen if the wind blew from Port Sunlight!

Think your dealer should have explained that the voice button is a dummy in yours. Voice control only comes with the premium nav..........

However, shouldn't it control the telephone, as Martin mentioned? Time flies like an arrow; fruit flies like a banana

I don't think so, Doc. The voice module is a part of the premium nav setup. In the D3, with PTI factory fit, the telephone module has a voice control element (though it wouldn't let you turn off the radio, or switch CD tracks...).
Without PTI, and only with Cap'n Bluebeardtooth, you get nada on the vox front.
Unless you opted for premium nav, there is simply no vox box on the D4, just a redundant knob.....or an appendix, in other words.
(And if you nip into Uncle Tom's Cabin and try some of the local brew , you won't have a vox box either...but then you are a doctor, and would know that! )

I would say with 600Nm of torque it does mean business!
Unfortunately the 3.0 isn't an option with a commercial
black is a pain to keep clean but having seen a few pics of a black one now it is definatly the colour for me
trouble is I've got a sod of a wait until January now
