Hi All,

I've finally got to the point where I can get myself a Discovery (HSE). However during my search I have noticed that late D3's and early D4's are not that dissimilar in price.

Now my question (as you have probably guessed) is what is the better option to go for? I'm looking around the £9k mark and there are a few early D4's (2010) with about 120k miles on that come up but there also seems to be plenty of late D3's (2009) around that price as well.

Are the late D3's pretty solid (water pump?)? are the early D4's good or did they have teething issues?

Many thanks for you advice.

Pezzer

p.s. I did try to search but seemed to get a results mainly around first impressions of the D4 when it came out.

Do not under any circumstances google land rover 3.0 snapped crank, sdv6 snapped crankshaft!

Anyone here imported a RHD petrol D4 from those markets that have them (5.0l or the S//c 6 cylinder)?

I should add if any of you hang around the mechanics pages/forums you will see theres way more crank issues than posted on this forum.

If you read enough posts on this forum you will see that D3 are the best then D4 are the best and now they are all running off and driving Volvos.

As one member put it he didnt like the thought of driving around in a 30k hand grenade that could go off at any time for no reason, kind of sums it up dont you think?

but isnt that true for almost any new motors these days (inc BMW & Merc) - as almost nothing is cheap to fix on modern motors

D4

You know what, your likely to be using it in the UK, probably to go to work and the shops, occasionally on holiday. Its a dream of a car, I wouldn't be put off getting one.

And remember in a very short time we will all be in electrical cars lamenting the demise of a big V6 diesel.

Go back to your original question, late D3 of early D4. Early D4 would be my recommendation.
Discovery 4 3.0 HSE 2010 year. I like it a lot. Now with winch 😂

Thank you for all the replies. Looks like the D4 is getting the most recommendations. Time to focus the search in that area.

Good luck finding one! I'm still looking for one myself. I do need to shift my BM first but can afford to have both for a few months! I just think my list of wants it's too much for my budget Sad

Sdv6 vs tdv6 is a grey area on what's different. I found it confusing so if you go for a sdv6 8spd then you a guaranteed to get the latest instant of a D4 possible for your money which I personally have found more reliable than the older vehicles.

AFAIK there isn’t any “after ......... they don’t go bang, sir” date. 2012 is talked about as such, plenty examples of later D4 engines that hadn’t received the memo. Whistle

isnt the rule of thumb to always go for as new and low mileage a car as you can afford though ? (unless you want a cheaper, older one for a specific reason )

the reasoning being that more snags have been ironed out in the newer models.
