Having driven both the D4 & D3 I have no doubt the 3 is eclipsed by the 4 in terms of power, ride, gadgets etc. but every time my gaze falls on a D4 in the classifieds I remind myself that I could afford to replace the engine in my D3 (when it inevitably goes pop ) but I might struggle with the much higher price for a D4 lump (when it inevitably goes pop ) especially if I've laid out double the cost of my D3 for a D4.Just 'cause you got the power... that don't mean you got the right.

They are the same engine.
I guess you mean get the 3.0l?

Sdv6 vs tdv6 is a grey area on what's different. I found it confusing so if you go for a sdv6 8spd then you a guaranteed to get the latest instant of a D4 possible for your money which I personally have found more reliable than the older vehicles.
The 3.0l engine is the same in all vehicles.
But you are sort of correct in buying an 8 speed. But they changed again with a face lift, then the adding of start stop etc. So you only get the latest EU6 D4 by buying one, buying a MY12 wont get you the latest D4.
As the Op is looking at early vehicles, he will likely see some as 3.0l TDV6 and some as SDV6. They will both have the same 245hp engine, and same issues. The MY12 has the 8 speed and 255hp but still the same engine.
The main difference between a pre MY12 SDV6/TDV6 is the badge on the back, and some will have a dpf. MY12 is the change of gearbox and 10hp extra. As you get towards the latest cars, start stop, then add blue is added. Complex, but they all have the same engine.
