Do I go for a D3 or a D4
Hi All,
I've finally got to the point where I can get myself a Discovery (HSE). However during my search I have noticed that late D3's and early D4's are not that dissimilar in price.
Now my question (as you have probably guessed) is what is the better option to go for? I'm looking around the £9k mark and there are a few early D4's (2010) with about 120k miles on that come up but there also seems to be plenty of late D3's (2009) around that price as well.
Are the late D3's pretty solid (water pump?)? are the early D4's good or did they have teething issues?
Many thanks for you advice.
Pezzer
p.s. I did try to search but seemed to get a results mainly around first impressions of the D4 when it came out.

I've got a MY10 D4. It's had a few niggles, but nothing which you wouldn't expect in a car of its age. It's almost covered 130k miles.
A word of warning about going for an HSE - if you look at it rationally, it'll be fitted with a litany of toys you'd never spec for yourself....but once you've got them, you can't imagine ever being without them.2014 - D4 2010 HSE Nara Bronze
2012 - FL2 2009 GS Stornoway Grey
2001 - VW Passat Estate Inky Blue
1999 - Ford Mondeo Light Blue
1998 - Rover 25 Red

I'll go the other way Moo,
Pezzer if it helps neither have any issues with the cooling system. (some might say the only system that doesn't) You get more toys on the D4 as well a bigger grin on your face when you stab the "go pedal" but good maintenance records are an imperative whichever you choose.yµ (idµ - eAµ) ψ=mψ

I've only got a poverty spec GS but it's coming up for 160k miles and have not had any major problems (said very quietly so it doesn't hear me )
Servicing and maintenance are the be all and end all for these vehicles, the more the better!
This doesn't mean you'll get a car that won't go "bang" but its less likely and I would suggest that a D4 with the sort of mileage you are looking at has probably got over the really nasty problems. Make sure the cam belts have been done.
Look at a few, drive them and then take your pick and enjoy Uncle Ray's spare wheel protector

Some late 2009 D3 (2010 registered) have some D4 components as mine does. It even has the D4 rear end/bumper from the factory.
