Good for winter?
I'm not too impressed. I've had my 2010 D4 a week. Great car for very little money and on the whole I like it. But the weather's taken a cold snap and I'm not too happy. I had imagined a car with this reputation would be especially good in cold conditions. But this morning I realised the heater takes forever to do anything meaningful. The screen washer nozzles were frozen solid and remained so for the 10 minutes I was driving. The heated front screen did nothing whilst the rear was clearing well. I don't know if the front elements are working or if they are just much slower than the rear.
So is this to be expected or should I be looking for something wrong? My OBD scanner shows no faults at all.

My front screen clears really quickly, you may have an issue.
Washer jets freezing over can be partly avoided with right mix of fluids, not just water
Running your FBH before your journey (if you can set the timer) makes a huge difference and on these frosty mornings, mine is close to toasty. Also eases my mind that things are warmed up a bit before starting.

I'm guessing FBH is some kind of timed cabin heater and I don't have one of those. I've always thought just letting the car idle outside the house to get up to temp was bad for the engine. Maybe I've listening to old wives tales?
You're right about the washer fluid, given that it hasn't been refilled since I bought it the dealer might have used simple water. It's being serviced today but when it comes back I'll suck out whatever's there and replace with winter screen wash.
I'm no auto electrician but I guess it won't be too hard to figure out if the front screen is getting a supply.
I'll post the results!
If the car is being services why not ask the garage to check that the FBH is working correctly before it is returned.
It only takes a couple of minutes & if not working they may be able to fix quickly.

There are a number of ways to pre-program the FBH, or to operate it remotely.
I have a Land Rover remote control, which is excellent:-

I believe all (or nearly all diesel Land Rovers) have a FBH, I know my 1st green oval which was a 2001 FL1 TD4 had it. No manual controls but configured to come on below a set temperature.
My 2012my D4 SDV6 XS had a FBH but it was not manually switchable until I got the timed climate enabled by GAP tool. IIRC HSE and above had timed climate as standard but not remote. I could have added the remote function but would have had to buy other components including the key fob.2011 D4 XS 305 MY12 - gone but not forgotten

I was driving around in Yorkshire a couple of weeks ago and my old D3 was great, started up very quickly in -4 early in the morning, front and rear screens cleared quickly using the 'prog' button, and the FBH got the coolant temp up to a decent level well within 10 minutes of driving. I've never ever had an issue with the windscreen nozzles freezing up either - sounds like potentially you have a couple of issues to sort.

I’ve just been out and wiped all my door seals (including the rear tailgate and bonnet seals too) with silicone spray.
We had a hard sharp frost last night, which reminded me to do it in preparation for winter. Stops the doors freezing to the seals and damaging them.
Helps to keep the seals in good condition as well.I’m a Disco 4 believer. What a vehicle!

Well, I looked under the bonnet .....
And there it was.
So now to buy a remote!

I respectfully disagree. And we get a real winter here.
All of the examples given are easily sorted should one stick to the recommendations and proper maintenance.

Try cleaning the contacts to the heated wind shield it sorted our heated screen out. Clears in a couple of mins by yhe time iv scrapped the side windows it's ready to go

Good call. I’d forgotten about doing this. Even in the balmy southern UK it’s frosty !Gary
