Martin does this site use Google Analytics? Reason I ask is that my internet security system blocks the transmission of any info with 4 digits (in the correct order) of my password in it and every page I visit on the D3 site now results in a box popping up to say that someone is trying to rob my password A few days ago this only happened infrequently now it happens on every topic I read

Yes it does - it is entirely a coincidence that the same characters appear, and I'm afraid I can't change the analytics code.

Thanks, seems to be working fine again today - although I have fine tuned my security system and blocked Google Analytics altogether - not sure if thats working the way I wanted yet though. 1996 Discovery 1 300TDI ES Biarritz Blue, sold

I force google analytics and a lot of other data stealing sites to my own PC where they don't find what they're looking for. See here for a hosts file to do the same.

Just hold on a second guys - this site uses Google Analytics to capture visitor numbers, and the final statistics are used for information to prospective sponsors.
It doesn't take any personally identifiable information from you, and is vital to the site.
If everyone blocks Google Analytics there will be no statistics, so no sponsors and no site.
So please consider why I'm using it, it's not to scam you or steal anything from you, it's simply to track site visitor hits

I understand the reason for Google Analytics and why you use them Martin, the one thing I do not quite understand is why information is taken (so to speak) from my PC - my security suite only stops info from my PC being transmitted. Therefore it should not stop statistics being recorded when someone visits a page etc - at least that is how the statistics are recorded on the website that I manage - it is a church website so the stats will not be anywhere as near complicated as they will be from this site.
Maybe the IT'er in me but I just don't like any info from my PC being transmitted that I have not authorised and sent myself. 1996 Discovery 1 300TDI ES Biarritz Blue, sold

Hmmm....is your password something to do with someones date of birth maybe? Someone who was born in December 1993?
If so, then as Martin says, it is pure coincidence that disco3.co.uk's ID number (129334) contains 4 digits from your password.
You mention that your security software blocks any data transmissions that contain these four digits (fair enough) - but then you say that google analytics is taking information from your PC? I don't understand.
Google Analytics does not send/transmit/steal any personal data at all.....it would be impossible for it to do so using just javascript in modern browsers.
When you visit any web page, your browser sends HTTP header data that includes information such as your IP address, Operating System, Browser type and version, browser language etc and sometimes data about installed toolbars etc....this happens irrespective of whether GA is being used on the site.
This is the header data that my browser sends:
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US) AppleWebKit/530.5 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/2.0.172.33 Safari/530.5
You can make out my browser, OS, language and other bits and bobs.
GA gets your location from your IP address, your browser info from the bits mentioned above and then uses cookies to track your visits between pages of the same website and when you return etc.
It doesn't do anything that can identify you personally. I use GA on a forum and I can guarantee that the data is totally aggregated - there's nothing to relate browsing habits to individual users and IP addresses.
The statistics that you mention for your church website sound like a simple hitcounter. This will just count the 'hits' that a page has.....the GA scripts will track your visit to see if you're a returning visitor or a new one etc.....The main use for this is seeing if people follow advert links etc and from which page (campaigns and conversions) that follow that information.
GA is completely harmless. The code is also placed just before the closing tags for the page and most browsers would have already rendered the page before they start loading so it shouldn't slow the site down at all on your browsers.
As Martin says, info like this is vital to be able to attract sponsors and pay for the site so please don't go blocking them willy-nilly. 2006 Discovery 3 TDV6 SE Auto Buckingham Blue

No and no

If Google Analytics takes data from my PC it still involves the data being transmitted from my PC - just that I have not actually requested the info be transmitted.

Irrelevant anyway but the stats taken by my website not only include a simple hit counter, but also track everything (and more) that you list above as I also need stats for the various local companies that advertise on the site.

True and as I have said to Martin by PM I do not wish to make his analytic data inaccurate but until I find out why this is happening the block on Google Analytics will stay. I have 2 other computers that I use for accessing this site and they do not have the block on GA but have exactly the same security set up and I do not get this problem I do not believe (at present) that what I have done to elimate the problem should affect the stats. 1996 Discovery 1 300TDI ES Biarritz Blue, sold

Damn.....now I've got to start all over again to figure out your password....I was sooooo close

This is the bit I didn't quite understand - GA doesn't take any data from your PC in a 'security-risk' sense of the word. It reads it's own cookie (it can't access anything other than this) and sends this data. As you say, it does transmit the value pairs from the cookie, but this is the same concept for any other website that you visit. There's nothing covert going on and the script has no access to anything stored outside of its own cookie or HTTP header data...
WOODY179 wrote:until I find out why this is happening the block on Google Analytics will stay.
If you're concerned about the security of your data, I certainly can't argue with that

Strange - so it would seem that the problem is only related to one computer?
I suppose that both disco3.co.uk and GA will store and read the same type of cookie and data on all machines/browsers.
Are you using the same browser on each computer? If it's only one particular browser/computer, then it could even be something else that is causing this.....
Is the problem browser being told to block 3rd party cookies (this is how it would treat a GA cookie whilst visiting the disco3.co.uk site)?
I hope you get it sorted anyway 2006 Discovery 3 TDV6 SE Auto Buckingham Blue

My thoughts too.
2 computers are using Vista Ultimate and the other XP Pro but I am using the same browser on all 3 (IE8) - the browser is supposedly set up the same on all 3 but I am double checking this at the moment.
I have now removed the block on GA, as the data theft box (for the password) started to pop up again just after 2pm today - but not as frequent as before I am not too concerned at the moment as I believe that it is just a coincidence, it's just that the box keep poping up is a bit annoying - if I can prove that it is to do with the GA for this site I can just approve it next time it pops up and that will be the end of it.

Sorry Martin, I was concentrating more on speeding my browsing than on any undesirable effects.
