GPS antenna for carputer OEMish?? Finally installed carputer
I'm looking for a usb gps module/antenna for my carputer to mount in the normal location of the factory gps that looks "OEMish" anyone have a good one sourced allready? Or what about using the oem one as an antenna for a usb one?
I finally installed my carputer in its permanent location over the weekend so its about time I get cracking on finishing it all up..

As far as I know the OEM aerial isn't visible (someone on here might correct me) I certainly don't know where mine is.
Are you thinking of the telephone aerial that is the black dome on the roof above the rear brake light? If so then I have seen these for sale on ebay so you could buy whatever GPS you liked and then house it in on of them.
Is that what you mean? I'm not sure if later cars put the GPS aerial in there as well, but I don't have one even though I have Sat Nav.D3 HSE MY05 Auto

Yes that's what they look like, I've got an 05 HSE so it doesn't have the bluetooth which is why I don't have the aerial.
I don't know the answer to sticking an aerial where the original ones are. Someone like Wiggs will probably be able to tell you. I'm sure he'll see and look at this thread as he's done the whole carputer thing.D3 HSE MY05 Auto

As mentioned the GPS antenna is built into the high-level brake light. In theory it wouldn't be much good in the roof fin as it wouldn't have a clear line of sight to the sky if a roof rack was fitted. By sticking it in the brake light it keeps it out of the way.
When I installed my CarPC I did a few experiments with regards to GPS receiver position as I wanted it completely hidden.
In the end I found that it worked perfectly hidden above the front courtesy lamp cluster simply using the magnetic base to hold it in place. The signal strength was obviously less than if it had a clear line-of-sight, but not too much difference.
I think it also depends on the type of receiver. I think a SIRF III would probably have trouble in this position, but mine is a MTK-based USB receiver and works great up here even though it's under the steel roof panel
Remember that your CarPC is mounted in the luggage area, whereas mine is fitted under the passenger seat with the USB cable run down the A-pillar, under the upper-glovebox and then back through the centre console, coming out under the seat. Most of the have have 5m cables so there is a bit spare.
Here's a pic...
Cheers,
Paul
