GPS Best for OS Grid Refs?

Any recomendations for best GPS that can use OS Grid References or PC mapping software for off road/overland trips?

Memory Map is the best in my opinion for the UK. OS maps down to 1:25k. Will run on a Toughbook or port to a PDA.

If you are planning an Africa trip one of the other commercially available programs will work better as you will be on bitmap digitised maps rather than the high standard OS ones we have in the UK. They tend to be scanned and then calibrated versions of Russian maps, or at least they were a couple of years ago last time I looked.

Have a look at the Toura Tech Quo Vadis or OziExplorer sites...

Have a look at the Garmin range, I use the 60cs with a colour screen eithier alone or connected to Memory Map software on my laptop. If you get the auto package you can use it for door to door on road navigation - no voice guidance - with European city explorer. Larger screen models like the 276 are good for a built in set up, mine comes quading, kayacking or walking too.

Bodsy,
it will stand up to splashing or being accidently dropped into the water. I keep it on a lanyard while kayacking, or a hanlebar mount on the quad. It is the favoured model for LRE trips and training. The latest models also take a micro SD card to increase memory, mine as all of Memory Map from the Hebridies to south of Bristol loaded in, plus room for waypoints, tracks and routes, built in POI, fuel etc.

Hi

I have a Garmin 76Csx GPS system. Flexible since you can upgrade micro SD card cheaply and easily. It can be set in UK Ordnance Survey or Lat/Long mode as an option. If you but off internet make sure you get UK/Europe base maps (cheap versions are often US!!)

Sites like Scottish Mountaineering Club (SMC) can give you free access to UK tope maps which is a lot cheaper than buying OS mapsoftware.

Battery power is good (maybe 12 - 14 hours )

Screen is colour and easily read

Think there is a power lead available for car use as well

Good luck

Disco3newbie (hopefully!!)

All the walking Garmin's including the 60cs are IPX7, so waterproof to a few meters, you can't drown em unless you really try.

I think they just announced a new model, the 60csx which has SD slot not internal memory as well as an altimeter. They have really come down in price, these models were £350 last time I looked at replacing my slightly long in the tooth 12xl, but they seem to be about £200 now. EDIT: Ah, its not new, its old, my mistake, its still great value at £200 not £350!

Disconewbie - good luck with your quest, and remember to beat down on price at the moment!
