GPS Recomendation pls
my trusty tomtom has now bitten the dust. Im off to France next month with a small convoy and im leading the way.
Can anybody suggest a decent unit that will do onroad i.e. Routes to/from France and be able to do offroad events?

Personally I think that TomTom is the best SatNav around. I have a tomtom Go 910 that has UK, Europe and US maps on it it's great although a little old now. I have been somewhat depressed with the built in Sat Nav on my HSE, it's nowhere near as good. With regards to the offroad side of things, I use a garmin Etrex. It depends on what you want, but I want something I can walk with as well as stick in the car. The new satmap stuff looks pretty good as well. Personally I think you need 1:25,000 maps for walking and probably better for off roading as well.D3 HSE MY05 Auto

I have to agree with Stu here, I've got a TomTom Go 730T and I often still use it in conjunction with the built in jobbie. I find the menu structure far more intuitive (familiarity maybe?) and I like some of the features like "Night view" for example to avoid the glare in the cabin when it's really dark outside, also the ability to update the software and download different POI categories etc.Clive

I agree with sacimiddx that the TOMTOM go Live range is good. I have a 540 Live, good updates on traffic, alerts you of cameras and you can have a live update of mobile cameras whilst on the go. Nice unit, clear display and upto date maps, as I have just updated the maps. Depends on how much you are going to use it, the 540Live just does England and cost £240 from Halfords. I don't think it does off road stuff, if you got a road angel 7000 adventurer they do OS mapping, but if you have had a tomtom then you may not like the layout of the road angel.

Thanks for the replies.
Old TomTom was OK, but after 4 years it's given its last wrong turn advice, and i want something thats gonna last a bit longer (being a tight git).
Does anybody have any experience of Garmin or other such makes?

I've got a Garmin 60Csx that i use for walking/kayaking, My Dad has an old handheld Garmin GPS which is still going strong and must be well over 10 years old now! They are very well made, especially anything designed fror use outdoors or marine environment
Not used their vehicle products yet though!

have tried a few, garmin, sony navman and to be honest the tomtom is by far the best to use, most intuitive menu's easiest to use. just better.
Only thing it misses is the offroad, 4 years is pretty good going for an electric gadget.....

Add my vote for TomTom. I still use a TT in preference to the D3 satnav..
