And today. A bit of a train morning getting to Hiroshima so calls for a few train pics.
This weird looking train is what we’d have taken if we’d done the Aso visit on a Fri/Sat/Sun. I was too slow to get a pic of the front but it was certainly stand out.

With very cute dog logos on the side. Sweeeeeeeeeeeet.

Then our train to Kokura, the Sonic train. Not sure if the train is named after the hedgehog or vice versa but it’s certainly bright blue.
And in Kokura this rather fast looking train, it was an all-stops train so even though it looked fast our Shinkansen would get us here faster.

Talking of Shinkansen.
Plenty fast enough.
Certainly faster than the very modern tram to the hotel.
Bit of a breather then out in the heat to the Peace Park. Pretty busy with school kids but nice to sit & watch the world go by.

Ground zero we think.

Before & after.

Then a short walk to the castle. Well it should have been short but this was the 4th sign that said 300m to said castle.
Pic of said castle, just to prove it does exist.

Then back to hotel via MickyDees and now enjoying a beer watching the Thomas Crown Affair.
PS And talking of trains and nukes, Kokura where we changed trains today should have been the target of the second nuclear bombing. However it was obscured by smoke from conventional bombings the day before so the alternate target, Nagasaki, was prosecuted by the crew of Bockscar. And the rest is history.

Great pics as always Del and good to see the school kids are being shown their history.
I did wonder if Mrs Del had approved you posting a pic especially after your revised escape plan from the croc Uncle Ray's spare wheel protector

Morning all, another bootiful day in Japan. Last pic from downtown Hiroshima, we were supposed to spend a few nights there but had to cut it short. To paraphrase Arnie, we’ll be back.

Headed on local trains a little W from Hiroshima to Itsukushima island, where the famous Torii gate in the sea is. JR ferry from the mainland, included in the rail pass, then join the throng of tourists. Well it was a lovely day and a Saturday.
Weird bamboo floating bits, poss tops of fish pens.

And the Torii. After 9am the ferry does a little detour to get closer.
And then ashore. And lots of oh dear puns, the island is famous for the tame deer and they seem to love the attention. Prob hoping for a scubysnack but everybody was obeying the signs.

This one managed to get coaxed right into the middle of this group pic, even looked at the camera.

And the Torii from the land side.

That was it for the tourist things, had train combo booked to this hotel near Osaka/Kansai airport to fly back to LHR tomorrow. Only other thing of note was this Hello Kitty Shinkansen. Would have been interesting travelling in it but it was going the other way.

Alarm set for early o’clock, gonna be a long day tomorrow. Looking forward to getting back on travels in a week or so.

Evening folks, now where were we?
Greeting from LHR T3 Cathay’s lounge. Dim sum has been scoffed and just got to stay awake as still mostly on Tokyo time. Luckily got moved to an earlier flight as a delay on the original flight meant we’d get to Hng Kong just in time to wave off the aircraft to Osaka.
Gratuitous pic of the view, well would be rude not to.

Just another 12 hour flight, 3 hours in HKG then 4 hours to Osaka.

Let the travels re-commence
At some stage we will be expecting a write up of the various airports you have encountered and, more importantly, how to scrounge upgrades to airport lounges Uncle Ray's spare wheel protector

Unfortunately upgrades haven’t been scrounged, if we had kids it would be classed as spending their inheritance.
No way were we going to be able to fly back for 5 days from Japan travelling in the back of the aircraft. We’re pretty knackered at the mo, travelling econ or even prem econ would have been torture.
Saying that, our “proper” return flight in July is Prem Econ, unfortunately via Bangkok & Stockholm.
