Not looking too shabby from Beijing onwards TBH. Plus the train there is supposed to be kept very hot so it will be shorts & string vest from well before Singapore.

Minor change to plans. In China they only issue long haul rail tickets 30 days ahead. We tried to book a 13 hour train ride in 1st class where the seats look like this:
Instead there is only 2nd class available at half the price of 1st:
Or business class at twice the price of 1st:
Needless to say we’re going for the latter, and SWMBO’s not even bothered if she’s not sitting beside me!!

We won’t miss a new phenomenon that is the rental electric scooters just abandoned on the pavements, they are virtually everywhere. I saw one local (I think) take one from the middle of the pavement and put it to the side, it’s strange how peeps just seem to drop them where they get off, like litter. I wouldn’t have thought it would be long until local peeps tidy them up by chucking them in a skip if one was handy. Plus half the pavements are cycle/scooter lanes so you’ve really got to keep your eyes & ears open.
Finland next, well for about 36 hours, got to remember they are a different time zone for the train to Helsinki tomorrow.

Regarding these scooters. I saw them in use in Los Angeles, they looked like an ideal way to cut traffic congestion.
Then the other weekend I was In Frankfurt and again, there was loads of them. All with little tiny number plates in the back! They don’t seem to be regulated, but with proper use I can see benefit.
My son reckons local traders and people can get paid to collect them and charge them up?

We never saw any being charged, the only charging point we saw had all its connectors cut off. We did think they would get collected overnight but we were out of our hotel at 6:10 this morning and they were still where they had been left the day before. It’s not like the Boris Bikes in London where the bikes get docked up at the end of use, these scooters are just abandoned where they are dropped, sometimes nowhere near anything that would be a destination, presumably they had run out of juice. In some places you were picking your way through abandoned scooters when walking along the pavements. I’m really glad they are banned from British pavements, they are a menace in Stockholm as half the pavements have been converted to cycle lanes and they fairly hoon along, whether in the lane or not. At least the bikes use their bells so you can hear them, well sometimes.

Oh, and they let us into Finland. Tucked up in a hotel at Turku port so morning train to Helsinki tomorrow. Than dump the bags and explore the mean streets of the capital. And Suomenlinna island/fort complex.

The two wheeled scooters are , the companies that don’t pick them up are and people who leave them in the middle of the sidewalk are also and should be .

Thank you. Liking it so far. Hotel 100m from the ferry terminal, cheap bottle of vino for dinner and Fox channel on TV. Just got to get over the time difference from Sweden, we’ll make sure phone is set right so we don’t miss the train tomorrow morning.
PS and making sure we avoid Finnish Liquorice.
