Hi i was on the weight bridge at the local scrapyard had a trailer on a little wooden thing the size of a match box about 100kg, empty i weighted in at 2740kg that was with me out the car so looking around 2600kg 2640kg might give you some idea.. Wanted D4s non runners pm for competitive price.

From LR website, D4 2.7 manual figures are
Quote:
Base kerb mass* (weight from) (EU) 2,476
Maximum mass of vehicle and trailer combination (GTW) 6,740
*EEC kerb includes fluids, tools, spare and 75kg driver
I assume D3 will be similar (and autos quite a bit more in D3 and D4), but you need to be clear on what you're looking at compared with figures in current legislation. Even in these figures, you've got EU vs EEC, mass vs weight. so it's all a mess. And then you need to look at different rules for personal use vs business - towing your own 3 tonne speed boat is, ISTR, just fine, but if you were delivering it to a client you'd have to obey a whole different set of rules.
I rather suspect you need to seek professional, legal advice - then at least you might have someone to sue when you get pulled over!

Cheers Martin,
Do you think the rules are deliberately a mess to keep us in trouble?
I love the 75kgs driver bit, Foxtrot Oscar, thats my lunch!!!!
Might just hitcha bad boy up to 750kgs Gross weight and F it go for it - the D3 will probably break down bfore it gets to a weigh station anyhoo!!!

Not sure though but maybe look into it Current: D3 commercial
Past: but not forgotten D3 HSE x2, 5 TD5 disco2's, 1 200tdi disco1, 2 300tdi disco1 one of which was a commercial, Off roader with a rather large spec, ARB's and big travel suspension to name a few.

Rules are a mess, for sure... is it deliberate? Don't know. I do know from my favourite open canoe forum that it's very hard to find any specific advice on what's an allowed overhang from the car (60% of distance from front axle to back bumper is one answer, but another says that over 2m you have to have proper signage, which is not mentioned in first one!) I also know that a few years ago we sought advice from HMRC on VAT treatment of exporting intellectual property to Spain for translation and re-use, and the verdict came with the broad caveat that if we later decide the advice was wrong, we can still come after you... I think at least in this instance they would only come after us for the difference in duty, and not for punitive fines, but still!

You only need a tacho when you are running your vehicle for commercial use(hire/reward) over 3500KG GVW, GVW is everything of course; vehicle, trailer, cargo, people on board etc etc. Which means when using a disco 3or4 to pull a trailer over about 1000kg for commercial use, you need a tacho. (when you use a tacho you will also need other stuff like an Operators licence, and you will be limited to how long you can drive for like HGV's)
