This might be a bit of a dumb question, but do people change their tyres to gain more gorund clearance? My car has it's stock rubber on it for now, but come time to change the boots, should I think about a bigger profile to give me some more ground clearance to help when I do go off-road, or am I likely to run into trouble with the tyre and its fit with the wheel arches, turning etc.
I'm guessing most people change so they get a tread pattern suitable for what they're using the car for and for durability and any marked change in ground clearance requries toying with the suspension as well.

The circumference of the tyre will not vary that much to make a lot of difference. If it did the tyres would rub as soon as you turned the steering wheel hard left or right.
That's as I understand it...

Hi Rich,
Ours came with standard road rubber on 17" wheels, I use Grabber AT2 on 18" LR wheels for off road and have changed to a nice new set of 19" wheels with the new Pirelli ATR tyres for road courtesy of Ken
All the wheels were/are standard LR, as are the tyre sizes. As Simon says, if you stick to the sizes in the book for the D3/LR3 the circumference however some peple have changed to put specific tyre brands on such as BFG's which don't yet come in the standard D3 size ranges and therefore they can have issues with the tyre rubbing as they are often wider and have a slightly larger circumference - also bear in mind that going for non standard tyre sizes could affect your insurance and the speedo reading
MrH LRs are a fond memory, apart from the maintenance.

Hi Rich,
I run 265/65/17 Bridgestone AT's, wider than stock but with in a few mm
of stock diameter, and no rubbing issues at all
Stock tyre diameter is around 750 mm in 70 aspect ratio with the MT/AT's at
that ratio would be around 800mm, thus a net height gain would be 25mm.
Thus some of the guys have rubbing issues.
The 65 ratio is becoming more available with a diameter around 753mm.
As for the 18/19" rims the stock tyre diameter would still be in the 750mm
range, but the side wall gets narrower.
Cheers.
