Guide to refurbishing Front Fog Lights UPDATE 1YEAR ON

Just a quick update to this how to guide showing how good the fogs still look a year after being refurbished

The front fog lights on my Disco were wet through on the inside and looked a mess so I decided to remove and refurbish as they are over 10 now, I have listed the tools I used and the order iI did the work with pictures.

Tools required.

Small flat bladed screwdriver.
Small Pozi screwdriver
small tri star screwdriver (sorry not sure on size)
Wire Brush
wire wool
cellulose thinners
Hot air stripper
Glass cleaner
Chrome paint
Vaseline

First job was to remove the fog lights, first take the cover off the front by popping off with a flat blade screwdriver then undo the trx-star screws (sorry not sure which size) then undo the bulb holder from the back of the fog lights then take them to the bench.

This is what they looked like after drying them on a radiator for an hour

Next step was to undo the screw holding the adjuster onto the body of the fog light as shown in this picture

Once the adjuster bracket was undone I used the heat gun to soften the plastic tabs that hold the body onto the lens, I have put screwdrivers pointing to the tabs in this picture

Once the tabs are pliable gently prize open and pull the lens body out from the main body as in the next picture

My lenses were not in great condition and had started to breakdown

Next step was to remove the rubber seal and put to one side for cleaning

This left the lens and as you can see its not in the best condition

Most of the silver came off with my finger then I used a wire brush to clean most of it off

I then used wire wool to get a good clean surface and then wiped down with the thinners

Next step was to apply several then coats of silver primer

Whilst the primer was drying I cleaned up the rubber seals

Once the primer had dried I applied several thin coats of Chrome paint on applying the final coat I reattached the rubber seal to ensure it would stick to the lens and not leak anymore

I decided that after 10 years the seal had set in its own position so I turned it round to hopefully make a better seal I also applied a thin smear of Vaseline to help

Last job prior to re fitting was to re attach the adjuster screw and then pop off the lid on the breather shown here next to the screwdriver and clean to make sure it will work

Finished results,

All in all it took about an hour each to do and cost £8.50 for the paint and the fogs look so much better now.

My fogs don't look in too bad of a condition, they just have condensation in them, I will take them apart as in your instructions, clean them and seal them back up
Thanks

Be careful when replacing the torx screw on refit... they're a little easy to lose ... Embarassed Embarassed

I seem to be missing something here - are we aiming to have good looking fogs or fogs that work. I cannot see painting the reflectors with silver frost will work nearly as well as proper coated reflectors - why not get the reflectors re silvered? rather than painted?

Simple answer is both, no more water in the fogs and the light output in my opinion is more than adequate using chrome paint
