The Ivy chain of restaurants is definitely overrated.

My Mrs and her friends went to London Ivy, had booked a table but then had to wait for it. Then once they finished their meal the restaurant couldn’t wait to get rid of them. Bill was rapidly left on their table and pushed them to pay it quickly.

…..but we might just be grumpy old gits?

Heard many stories from my cousin over the years her husband worked as a trader in the city many years ago and when they had a good month or quarter the managers would take them and their wives out for a meal the bills for these events were eyewatering running to many tens of thousands of pounds and with some courses costing a few hundred pounds per plate for something you might need a magnifying glass to see, my cousin often said they got a takeaway on the way home as they were still hungry

I remember going for a meal about 35 years ago the place was well thought of while the food was nice it was minimalist when it came to the veg which was one small potato, a green bean and a baby carrot hiding behind the steak

I once had lunch at the Lord's terrace at Parliament (was there for a professional event hosted by a Lord). The food was nice but not much of it. The wine, however, was both nice and in copious quantities. Perhaps things would work better in the country if those were reversed. Laughing

I remember the soup was brought out and the fire officer from the North East, who sat next to me, took one taste and said "it's bloody cold!". I said it's supposed to be cold, it's gazpacho. "N'ah, where I come from, soup is bloody hot!". So I had his soup as well as mine. Laughing

I had a meal in the Shard, and for pudding ordered lemon meringue pie - it came as deconstructed pie, a square each, about an inch square of lemon curd, pastry base and then meringue. Even put back together it wasn’t more than a mouthful, and god knows what the cost was.

Been to the Ivy twice (not London). First time was a special occasion for SWMBO and me and so I didn't bother about the cost. Second time was with a couple of friends. I knew it would be expensive before we went and so, again, didn't flinch at the cost.

Food is good, service is good, and it's a nice, relaxed atmosphere (Glasgow, anyway) - happy to pay for that these days, as long as it's a special occasion.

Regarding going hungry after a nice meal… about 10 or so years ago I happened to stay at the ANA IC in Tokyo and wanted to get a decent meal in the evening. Well, they had a nice restaurant at the top and while the food was good the portions were small, the flavors slightly weird and all that…..

….. so as I felt hungry afterwards I went to a McDonald’s close by and got a decent meal. Whistle Whistle

Little did I know that the place had one or two Michelin stars and my coworkers at home thought it was one of the most ignorant and hilarious foodie stories they’d ever heard. Rolling Eyes

Ironically, in principal, a McDonalds could get a Michelin star if they met the requirements of: the quality of the ingredients, the harmony of flavours, the mastery of techniques, the personality of the chef as expressed through their cuisine and, just as importantly, consistency both across the entire menu and over time.

Tricky to do, of course, but one could make the best burger in the world and achieve a star.

Went there once. Overrated as far as I'm concerned. I went to a contractor's bash at the New Queen Inn near Ringwood. Food was a 11/10, to the point I will go back, and its dog friendly. Sadly my Christmas meal was at the Fishers Pond at Colden Common. A very lucky 6/10, but if it was based on the pigs in blanket it would have been a 2. Not great
