Plastic and only turns 90 degrees open to shut, takes some getting used to, Daf say one use only, not heard of anyone using it more than once but Im sure someone has done it.

I don't think any mechanic would drive with an oil light on.

even with the seal missing the sump would be full and the dip stick still read minimum

From my understanding....

AKAIK the seal is there to prevent the oil that is running down the engine and slopping/spraying about coming out of the engine. On a short trip this will not equate to much. (its also there to stop dirt/water getting into the engine!)

With the oil over filled the crank seal is submersed. and therefore popping out has helped to remove the overfill of oil. Although by the sounds of it, it was too late to save the engine.


On the LR TDV6, even if the oil is not registering on the dip stick, there could still be 4 litres of oil in the sump.
It's the same with the old Mini A series engine.

A major problem with overfilling is that the rods/pistons churn up the oil and it gets aerated which makes it very difficult for the oil pump to pump it round as it's not designed to pump froth!

As Mikey said the crankcase breathing system should not allow any overpressure however if the overfilling took the oil level above the seal then the rods punching into the oil lake could cause dynamic pulsation to hammer on the seal making it pop out.

Basically that Garage owes you an engine Thumbs Up

I wouldn't have gone that far just yet

You need to prove that the garage caused the seal to fail, and then drove it knowingly, and caused the damage

I have seen the aftermath of overfilled TDV6 engines. Not one has popped a crank seal. ALL of them had ran on their own oil as a result of overfilling...

You really need to get the fault.codes read from the car and determine if there is an engine overspeed fault code logged.
If that code is there, it's a slam dunk new engine, as the expense of whoever overfilled the engine oil Thumbs Up

Over filled oil

You can imagine my delight when the mechanic returned the car after its mot ... “yep, passed ... I had to add about 2L of oil though ... it was really low.”

“That’s peculiar,” I said. “I did a full oil change 3000 miles ago, and checked it a fortnight ago.”

Sure enough, the dipstick was covered in oil way past the middle red ball and up to the metal ... just spent an hour sucking it out with a pump!

I’ve never seen a tester check my oil, but surely checking the oil level is one of the most basic things to do! How can they get that wrong.

engine damage

ok, having worked in a garage (renault and independent) plus a diesel fitter, any garage over filling has to put the matter right
Oil level max is below the crank, over filling caused slapping of the oil if it is too much, enging may or may not smoke but the slapping causes the crank wobble and snap. Seen it done on a triumph acclaim (shows my age)

DO NOT OVER FILL in hand book, haynes manuals etc and the Data garages have on all vehicles.

Play in the crank is possibly due to thrust bearings worn. Is it possible to remove sump and check all bearings and possibly replace them so restoring it. Embarassed

How did you suck the excess oil out?

Think I may have slightly overfilled on my last change (have a sloping driveway and despite being on ramps it's difficult to get it level) as I can now see a slight misting around the oil filler cap/ engine vanity cover and the dipstick is wet about 6mm above the top ball (on a level car park).

I bought a small pump which I attached to the dipstick tube.

I’ve a D4 now and the oil change for that is via the dipstick rather than sump, so that pump has had a lot of use!
