I just wanted to post a quick reply that I think the HDC in the D3/LR3 is fantastic. Compared to our Freelander (waaay too fast) and our Disco 2 (still too fast, and slow to react), the new HDC is flat-out-awesome. I used it for a very rocky descent in Low/1 and it was the first time I'd ever experienced what Land Rover has ben touting for years: a smart descent system that lets you focus on the terrain and your wheel placement...
Good stuff! '05 LR3 HSE
Departed: '62 Series IIA, '02 Freelander, '03 Disco

If you think HDC is awesome, wait to you try it in reverse. I was attempting to ascend this snowy, icy hill. It took me 4 tries, 3 of which required my backing down the hill. At the bottom of the hill the trail turned such that an uncontrolled descent would leave me in the forest. HDC worked perfectly. A Disco 2 behind me ended up backing down as well, but swerved into the forest. No damage, but still less than desirable. LR3 HSE

Try this...
Stall it half way up a hill, stick it in reverse with HDC on, take your feet off all the pedals (slowly off the brake in case it starts to slip) and start the engine. It'll just trundle down the hill and all you have to do is steer The End
