Evening, i use this forum alot! (very helpful) but dont post much so here goes about a week ago i left my sunroof open and it rained yes i know very stupid everything got wet around centre console and it was not happy park brake faults and all sorts dryed it all out and every was working again untill i stoped it and battery went flat with in about 20mins checked to see whats doing it and every is still on in the car
it still thinks key is in the ignition says so on the dash, sat nav and radio are still on and the bonging noise is there when you open the door
according to my iid it is reading that i am puting key in and out of ignition switch and auxiliary switch is always on not to sure what that means
dont really know where to start looking
any help would be much appreciated

That’s a strange one, I’m sure a techie will shed some light Metal auto sump & fluid change (3 hrs)
LR door puddle projectors (10 mins)
Tinted Bonnet wind deflector (10 mins)
All Intercooler pipes and Tbolts (2hrs)
3 injectors replaced so far (30mins)
Sunroof drain pipes both sides 2.5 hrs)
Rear discs, shoes,pads,callipers,flexi hoses, rigid brake line, n/s upper hub carrier bush and rear n/s upper arm (13hrs over 2 days)

Hows the electrics under the sill trims by the sides of the seats - are they full of water? Must stop buying shiny toys....

It may not be related to the water ingress.
My D3 would do exactly the same thing to me about once a week towards the end of my time with it.
It just didn't recognise that the key had been removed from the ignition, and could sometimes take 2 or 3 attempts at putting the key in and out of the ignition for it to turn off normally.
Might be worth a go, just in case.

Is it the lock cylinder that controls this or the electrical switch on the end of the barrel ? Metal auto sump & fluid change (3 hrs)

The key has to spring out with a thud and then a switch is operated

You could disconnect the switch to prove it.
But it’s much easier to spray wd40 and ram the key in and out a few times.

More than likely a connector or short between two wires. As said, check the sill wiring as there are twisted joins in there

simlar issues with mine reference the key in ignition chime.
Sometimes I remove the key and the car thinks the key is still in the ignition, sometimes leaving the display and radio live, sometimes not.
most annoying thing is that ramdamley the alarm will go off, never in the day obviously usually at 0300hrs. When I check the car, open the door the car thinks key is in the ignition!! what I don't understand is what makes the car think the key has been put back in??
As Pete K has suggested i think there must be two parts to it, sometimes just by inserting the key a couple of mm and then removing the warning goes off, other times I can just push the barrell with my thumb and the chime goes off. Going to remove the barrell today and try and lube the rod that runs all the way through the lock and into the switch in hope that something deeper down is sticking. We'll see.

thank you all for the replys it is abit wet in the sills i redid the green and white splice the other day in case it was that i think i need to look further in to the wires down there and make sure it is properly dry is there other joins down there other than the green and white?
i dont think its the actual ignition as i have taken switch off the back and all seems to operate fine and my iid also recognises that the key is going in and out

Reviving this old one...
I have this same issue on my 2005 HSE:
Car often not recognising that the key has been removed from the barrel
Alarm sporadically going off, I presume as it thinks that the key is being inserted without the car being unlocked
Radio power cutting out randomly whilst driving, I am wondering whether it thinks that the key is being removed and shutting down .
Do any of you recognise these symptoms and have a solution in mind? I'll give the barrel a spray of WD40 but if there's a permanent solution I'd love to hear it. 2022 BMW i4 M50. Bought Oct 2022. 10,200 miles and counting...

I have that since I got my D3 back in 2019. Spray conctat clearlner, give a good in and out with the key and you will loose up some of of the gunk inside. Then I spray some key lubricant . It will be good for a week or two. They all over again. (Never tried WD-40 but I suppose it should work the same.) Let me know if you tried
The sensor is actually in that little floppy thing at the entrance of the key hole.
If you inserted anything there it will assume the key is inserted.
The issue is worse in cold days. Also the alarm sometimes goes off because it thinks someone is trying to steal the vehicle.
I would love to disable/by pass this "alarm" feature if anyone knows how.
