head v heart what to do next?

Usually the head says keep and the heart says change but the lack of a Defender replacement and the D5 has turned this on its head for me. I find my heart saying keep the D4 and my head saying I need to change with 94k on the clock on a 64 plate. Its been very reliable but the miles are piling up!

So what to do?

Keep.... any recommendations of a good independent in the peak district? Need a 96k service soon! And then wait to see if the Defender replacement fills the gap or for Jim Ratcliffes Projekt Grenadier

OR Change.... but what to....

Sat in all the current range at dealers and came out depressed as like split tail gate and counldnt afford the only genuine article the FFRR. Maybe need to radically rethink and go for a stop gap solution until the new defender arrives 2019/20? and they then fettle out the inevitable launch problems. So a 3 year deal to 2021 then look again.

Another option i'm mulling over is to get a classic/project series/defender for the LR fix and run something else as the daily runner.

decisions decisions...

95k and worrying!- “character” on here is well on his way to around 700k miles at the last count, DLS are highly recommended and are not far from you, but what’s wrong with main agents Gordon Lamb in Chesterfield?
 It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

I’m in a similar position, albeit slightly more premature as I’ve still got nearly 11 months before my D4 is 3 years old.
They’ll not be a Defender on the market until late 2019 at the very earliest, based on previous LR launches.
So my thoughts are currently to keep the D4 until at least I know what the Defender is like, maybe longer or sell it later this year and buy a used SDV8 FFRR with the 2 year Approved Used Warranty.
I’ve not ruled out a 3.0 D5, I’ll keep an on used prices as I doubt I’d buy a new one.
I also regularly think about keeping the D4 forever and buying a used barge for business use. I’ve no room to park another car, so that wouldn’t be ideal.
I do fancy a SDV8 for a change though. Smile

Not so much worrying as trying to plan next move!

Main dealers don't seem to have capacity enquired about 96k service quoted July3rd as first free slot and £773. Must be busy with all the warranty work! Also expensive. I note many examples of high milers and i feel the D4 benefits from such use. Will look up DLS.

I ran my D3 until nearly 150k miles. It perfectly suited me, so I kept it as long as I dared. Only needed routine servicing and the standard replacements. I was offered a bargain used D4, so made the change. Regret selling it now.

I wouldn't have my head turned by the LR used warranty again. It's very restrictive, doesn't cover diagnostics and, because my dealer can't fit me, in I have to top it up for the pleasure of using my local indy...

There must be 1000’s in the same predicament. Me also. My 4 has been very good until now. It’s had an expensive failure, warranty direct didn’t cover it. It’s just had 96k, and needs tyres.

I’m not sure if the difficulty of getting a dealer workshop slot is nationwide? Mine took 6 weeks to get it in for the service, and 775 was my quote too. Was it Guy Salmon in Stockport by any chance?

I would hazard a guess the waitng times are due to a lack of mechanics and the lack of mechanics will be due to the poor wages.
Mechanics are getting harder to find in all disciplines nowadays as nobody wants to do it anymore!
The old guys cant wait to get out and the youngesters dont want to come in.

Its been a big problem in the hgv game for years now, but in the last few years its getting better due to wages going up and they are now getting on for 40k basic (south) and its not to hard to earn 50k plus without doing silly hours.

These long waiting times are partly due to the massive increase in sales.

The dealers were set up for 100k car sales a year and just a few short years later JLR are selling 600k! There is just not the capacity at the minute.

That’s useful to know; my mind had been made up on the LR warranty at 100,000 miles. No diagnostic time cover is a significant shortfall.

Yes my quote is from GS Stockport.

My current problem is my mileage is unpredictable currently 1000 per week which makes scheduling servicing difficult!

My car was serviced at end of April. A few jobs were identified on the free health check. The one job that WD has agreed to pay for ( power steering hose leaking) I decided to get done. The earliest date is 8th June.

I think the booking backlog has appeared since they merged the Jag dealership with the LR outfit, in their fancy new premises.

When they were at St Mary’s way, I always had a good one to one contact who made sure I could get a booking. Not anymore, it’s a bit faceless, and to be honest, their customer relationship management (call backs etc) is shockingly bad. Getting hold of a service advisor is harder than speaking to God!

First went to St Mary's way in 91 when I picked up first D1! I agree the move to new premises has changed the customer experience. I shared your experiences trying to get an appointment over the last two weeks whilst all the time the mileage piles up!

Talking of expensive services … broke it to SWMBO that the 7 year service is due next month and costs a serious amount of money. She's gone off to work muttering "sell it" or something similar. I tried not to listen too closely.
