Headlights D3 SE 2005

Hi, I'm a couple of weeks into D3 ownership after upgrading from a D2.

My 2005 SE has the xenon low beam headlights, and to be honest they seem a bit rubbish, I live on an unlit single track lane in a semi-remote area and I've noticed that the low beam lights don't throw out much light at all. The light seems quite white, but they don't throw very far at all.

High beam works great, the high beam H7 bulbs are Phillips extreme vision.

I've seen info about upgrading the OE D2s bulbs for Osram or Phillips versions, does anyone have any practical experience of these new bulbs ? Are they worth the money to upgrade ?

Thanks

Xenon bulbs do deteriorate with age so maybe you're in need of a change anyway. Is the cost difference massive?

These Osram Xenarc night breaker laser D2s bulbs seem to be around £85 a pair

The high beams are great, as they use the xenons. A flap opens and lets the light spread further up.

You can hear a click when this happens, if you have the engine off

Are you sure they are Xenons as that wasnt a standard fitment on SE only on HSE?

It has the little round projector(s)for the low beams and H7 halogens for the high beams.

And that's why you can do not quite kosher upgrades ... they all look like globes. It's what's I side that matters.
What do the labels say on top of the headlamp units?

They do have an H7 main beam as well. THey have them fitted for:

1) Long range lighting
2) for the flash function.

D4 did away with this.

If you look at the HID from the side, you will see the top half is dull.
When you select main beam the whole globe is bright.

these are called Bi Xenon

If you don't believe me, put some card infront of the H7's and see for yourself
