Heated Steering Wheel

Hi all

I have a heated steering wheel that was part of "The Large Ones" group buy in 2012.
its worked well until the last year when its been slightly intermittent in that it wouldn't always switch on when the button was pressed. it has now finally stopped working altogether.....

During the last year when its been intermittent during the start up it also never seemed to reach the temperature, cutting out when only half warm (I hope this makes sense) but you could turn it back on and sometime it would then further warm up and occasionally cut out more or less straight away.

I had been meaning to take a look at it but every time I went to take the air bag off it would start working again OK (sods law!!).

I have looked online and found out how to test the thermocouple, and the element, this would be my first point of call, and then test the ??switch??,??module?? anyone have any other suggestions??

I don't think the control module is linked to any of the other systems, I also did a good charge of the battery last week, and performed a battery cable disconnect and re-boot!!! (shorted out the battery cables, disconnected from the battery).

HELP does anyone else have any suggestions or experienced the same failure???

That sounds like a wiring issue as when you disturb the wiring behind the airbag it then starts working Thumbs Up

Well after a poke around, and successfully removing and re-fitting the air bag it's all working again.
I suspect the clock spring but can't really prove it as it seems to be working OK.
I had a poke around the main feed to the heater module from the clock spring and initially it didn't work, but after removing the plug into the clock spring and testing for the 12v feed that initially didn't seem to be there I tested again and it seemed to be present.
I then re-connected the feed to the module and it all worked OK.
A little annoying when you don't find a reason why it's not working, but just happy it is.
I will keep an eye on it and if it happens again I think I may look into a new clock spring.....
Thanks Geoff for your help and comments.....

Having driven my D3 over the weekend, to a certain point I am not sure the heated steering wheel is working as it did initially or should.
If I turn the heating on, it warms up (possibly not to the degree it did initially I think??) and then it turns off, I think it initially stayed switched on and maintained the heat in the wheel??
Does anyone know if you can get the wiring/module as a separate item (is there a part number??).
Thanks for any help.......

Geoff has it bang on. Your little loom below the airbag is where you need to be looking. Wink

Problem with the little loom is, where the cable attaches to the crimped pins is where the wire fails. Problem is, the insulation stays intact so the cable looks good but it's already failed.
You can cut the wire, solder in another length and re-crimp the ends if you're handy and have the skills/parts. If you're not, buy a replacement and swap it out. Wink

Hi Narpy

Thanks for this, I assume it's the end that plugs into the clock Spring??
I will have a go at repairing it, this would also tie in with it stop working altogether but playing with the plug and it made it work again. It's a bit like some of our power tools at work that sometimes the cable breaks near the cable clamp and just needs shortening.

Thanks for the offer Martin depending on how I get on I may well send it back, on another note is the plug the same one you sell on the WEB site for the feed into the clock spring for the heated steering wheel??? If all else fails perhaps I could fall back onto this??

Thanks for your help I assume this is a common issue???

To be honest I cannot remember what the connector is on the inside of the wheel. However assuming the connector housing is not damaged the connector terminals (pins) could be replaced.

Yeah, it's the end with the large white multiplug on it. Thumbs Up
No idea which wires you need to check but symptoms vary once that loom starts playing up.
Loss or intermitant cruise is common, as is the wheel switch illumination playing up.

Looks like this, but the broken white wire was a bit of a giveaway on this loom.

Sorry to revive an old thread and ask a dumb question but can you get a D3 style heated steering wheel? or is it only found on a D4 wheel?

My AutoDab SWC uses the D3 steering wheel buttons and I wouldn't like to mess with that functionality.
