Disco 2 has a sensor with a little blower motor attached to circulate the cabin air around the sensor and not allow it to heat itself up.1972 Range Rover Classic 2 door V8

How about just taking that cover beside the steering wheel off and stuffing around the sensor with tissues or something? Basically it'll then get its heat from the surrounding plastic & tissues rather than air flow.
No, the self-heating is due to too much current passing through the thermistor relative to the cooling effect provided by the ducting to the blower fan. JLR had 3 ways to fix this in the design phase: limit the current, change the thermistor or increase the airflow over the thermistor. Sadly they didn’t.
Some vehicles are worse than others due to the ducting to the sensor grille becoming pinched or crushed at manufacture.
Anyway, presuming correct ducting and foam sock, the proper fix is to add resistors to reduce the current flow to the sensor to reduce the self-heating.Land Rover - Turning Drivers into Mechanics Since 1948

My MY12 is the same. I've given up using Auto setting. Although reading on here it does seem to be MY15/16 that seem to be most affected.

As I've said before my MY 2016 has the same problem and I don't think there is any chance of LR coming up with a fix now.
On longer journeys I tend to press all three air distribution buttons (screen, vents and feet) which also takes it out of full auto. I have no explanation as to why but the car does seem to be able to maintain the correct temperature better in this state.
Shouldn't have to do it but at least it means you don't freeze on any journey over an hour long.
I genuinely don't think the issue is confined to a problem with the sensor behind the little grille. I'm convinced that the logic changed somehow, particularly related to the addition of the front windscreen temperature and humidity sensor that was added at the end of the car's development.

Had similar heating issues with mine - took to dealer and they tried a few things but was never as good as my D3 - was told it was working as intended.
Could we worse - you could have surround cameras as well - they're crap and apparently designed to be crap too!!! MY15 DIY Black Pack (Better than factory and half the price!)

Ive had the same issue so used to just leave it on high and turn it off when cooking and back on when chilly. Reality is we only need it high for a bit, then adjust down when comfortable.
I have noticed that when the car is started at a set level ie 25 and left alone, it warms and yet seems to stay stable and pleasant throughout my journey. Mess with the temp up or down and it throws a hissy fit, almost implying that it is confusing the thermostat. However give it a simple instruction to maintain a set temperature and it seems to work a lot better.
It might just be in my head, but having read this thread, numerous post sort of back up my theory about having a constant.
Interested in other owners findings.Last of the D4 HSE...
I agree with Fishboy on this. After numerous..... not arguments, let me call them discussions with the wife on this subject.
I jump in the car summer or winter, long journey or short journey and leave it set to auto and at 21°C and don't have any problems at all. Whereas the wife will start playing with the various outlets and settings and the car responds by spitting out the dummy and doing exactly the opposite of what she thinks it should be doing.

Afraid I disagree. Mine is usually set to 21 in the winter and 19 in the summer, on auto. I rarely adjust at all once I've set off. The reality is that in a 15 or 16 MY if you set off with it set to 21 and it's cold outside, an hour later and you will be cold inside, having not adjusted anything for the duration.
It's the complete opposite to my 2010 D4 in which the heating worked perfectly. I used to go months on end without ever touching any of the heating controls.
