Hey guys and gals.
I'm not 100% certain it isn't all in my head, BUT.
I seem to occasionally get my steering going heavier, particularly when steering to the right.
My first gut feel was as it's disparate, something in the steering line loose (a ball joint come popped but not disconnected maybe) but I can't see anything awry.
Previous MOT history suggests there might be play in the rack ends, does this sound like it might be a symptom? I can't figure out how it could be, but I'm new-ish to L319 chassis vehicles in general.
Ta all!

Had a brainwave this morning, and checked my power steering fluid level.
Nope. Plenty in there (though it looks very, very dark, I don't imagine old power steering fluid would cause notchy, heavy steering?)
It's now pretty consistently, at lower speeds, with heavy notches in the rotation.
I'll check the lower UJ on the 8th, I've got her booked in for gearbox and brake fluid flush, I'll wander around under her while she's up on the ramps and have a look.
Anything else to check boys and girls?

I’d look at the steering rack itself if there are notches when you turn the wheel. I understand the word notch like the steering wheel would feel as if it would jump while turning.

Lubricate the bottom UJ, all you need is a short length of hose pipe with a funnel on top, pour some WD40 or any thin oil down it to wash the dirt off followed by a drop of engine oil, check the clamp is tight that joins the top and bottom shafts together, could save you a fortune. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

F**k yes.
Can confirm, lower UJ.
Hosed with WD from the top to run down, got under with her on off road height and hosed the UJ as best I could (access is a bit , isn't it?) and worked it lock to lock twice. Repeated this process once more.
That's as smooth and light as I remember it ever being.
I'll get at it properly with a drop of oil or... maybe motorcycle chain lube would be a good shout, when I've got it up on my mate's ramps start of next month for the gearbox and brake fluid flush.
Maybe not a permanent fix, but that's a damn sight better than buying a new PAS pump, which I had visions of this month on top of the major service.
Thanks guys!
