To be honest it is a bit of a pain. You have to have the door open to be able to lift the hitch lever up to engage the ball. Problem comes when you reverse up to the van, with the door shut, you then can’t open it enough because it hits the jockey wheel handle!

So, sequence to avoid frustration-

1 Open rear door
2 Reverse to caravan (or roll caravan to car)
3. Engage caravan with car and lock the hitch.
4. Close rear door.
5. Fully raise jockey wheel.

You will probably find that to fully open the rear door with the jockey wheel raised is not possible. I bent the winding handle down a couple of inches to get over this.

Having said all this, the lower tailgate used to get in the way of the hitch when I had D3 and 4. They are easier than Defender though. Once your accustomed you will be fine. The Defender tows amazingly well.

Off Topic .. But I quick one... When I was going to get a 110 I investigated this and a few on the caravan forums had removed the top part of the alko stabiliser handle, apparently it screws off and you can still apply it without the top bit there, I think it might give you enough space? Acknowledging the jockey handle may still be a problem too.

Basically, the red part of the handle here:

A flaw in that plan, mine is a BPW hitch, so can’t take it apart. 😞
