Hello.. Should I buy one? Towing..

Hi all..
I know this is a silly question on a landrover forum but I'd like a proper opinion..

So.. My names Pete I live down in sunny Kent.
I've had well over 100 car (yes I think I have a problem)
Anyway I've settled down in recent years. Currently I have a boxster 986 as my daily, a rx8 racecat and trailer, classic mini, fiesta St amd a mreg 1995 pajero to tow the race car.

So I've towed with the pajero on and off for two years. It's now done 260 000 miles. And last time I towed the head cracked.. So it's just not worth repairing. Also when towing any hills it would slow right down to 40 on the motorway, where it's a old school diesel engine. So want something on a motorway will still tow uphill at 60ish

I was looking at getting something nearly new but I didn't want to part with the porsche. So the wife has given me 5k to spend..

I am going round in circles what to buy. The list is 3.2shogun, x5, touareg. Xc90, grand cherokee, disco 3

I'll admit the Mk3 shogun is leading the list due to it being jap and just being awesome. But I had a v6 one before so wouldn't mind something different. Also the diesel is still a old school diesel engine.

So I would like. Something I can rely on daily and holidays with boxster being more fun
I need it to tow 2t comfortably once to twice a month up and down the country and be reliable while doing it Wink
Fit four 18inch wheels and my tools in the back.
Mainly. Reliable
I'd like cruise and heated seats..

I've been looking at the 2.7 disco 3 Pretty much like this
Can I expect something like this to meet my.needs in being reliable?

Do the gearboxes etx ok for towing!?

Any help and advice would be great I'll do plenty of reading up on here too.

Thanks
Pete

You won't get to 260K happily on A D3 so stick to jap.

So right - Japanese 4x4s are often agricultural, noisy clattery engines and unrefined suspension - give an uncomfortable jittery ride and - in my experience are just damn uncomfortable..... (but often good seriously off road) so they have much fewer bits to go wrong.

A 'recent' Land Rover is a much refined vehicle giving an almost silent engine with a sublime 'limousine' ride (and also as good if not better off road) - and hence lots waiting to go wrong!!..... but I know which I'd rather have!..... Thumbs Up

I honestly don't think you'll tow a hill at 40mph with a d3, but I'd be pretty impressed to be proven wrong

Chances of that? Slim to none and Slim’s usually out of town. You may be lucky, but that’s highly unlikely.

I think most Land Rover owners buy with their heart NOT their head !!!
A D3 will do everything you'll ever need in comfort and style. BUT..... As all Land Rovers do it'll at some point drive you nut's !!! BIG TIME Big Cry

Those of us that have that Green badge running through our veins, stick with them regardless. It's hard to explain, but once it's got a hold there's no turning back... Mr. Green Mr. Green Mr. Green

I think you’ll find 9/10 Discovery 3 V8 owners will tell you they’re happy with their reliable ride. That is, if you can find them. Whistle

In all seriousness the Japanese vehicles have fewer moving parts and electronics. The D3 will be much more comfortable. Getting a petrol V8 removes most of the issues that people are really unhappy of on the turbo diesel V6s. You’ll still have to sort out suspension issues and such but they’re sort of.. sortable.

Thumbs Up
