The nut is in 2 parts, a hardened steel outer, and mild steel inner.
The outer part cracks, and when under the stress of being undone, splits in 2. With the strong part of the nut gone, the mild steel part isn't strong enough to take the strain, and chews itself up.

The first time you are aware of any issues, is at the side of the road, at night, while changing a puncture. Bin them now Thumbs Up My D3 Build Thread

As DM says take them off. I put a new locking nut on and 12 months later it had to be chopped off
