There isn't any inner or outer section on the locking wheel nuts on the D3.

Your problem lies with the adapter socket, as the little tabs that line up with the notches on the nut itself can shear off if the nut is put on too tight. As you've got a 05 D3, then it probably came with one of the original sockets.

However, I've still got the original socket that came with mine, which is one of the weaker ones, and I've not had a problem yet, and I've been changing over various sets of wheels quite a lot - the key is not to overtighten the wheel nuts, especially the locking nut.

Can someone explain how my dealer did the 30k service on my D3 and cleaned out the parking brake when the locking wheel socket was in my airjack bag at my house Question

I think I'd have to agree with Chris, it seems the locking wheel nuts are a complete waste of time.

rob, there are only a few different types of standard keyed sockets for the lock nuts.

Now that would make sense!!! Thumbs Up

2 of the problems my folks had with their D3 was lack of movement of the driver's seat fore & aft and no locking wheelnut. Only one solution, remove the now found wheel nut from the seat sliding mechanism! Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

bkehoe,

Thanks for your comments and advice, but I'm sorry you are incorrect on this occasion. I can assure you the locking wheelnut fitted to my car is in two sections and the outer section is spinning.

If you take one of your own off, assuming they are the same as mine you will see a very unobvious line around the circumference of the nut just below the outer "mushroom". This looks like a machining indentation and may be, but on the one i have this is where the nut has failed and is spinning around as a central spiggot.

I'll try and get the nut back from the dealer and post photos to help you see.

cheers

As per bkehoe - my 05 locking wheel nuts are merely a standard type nut with a different profile needing the LR adaptor socket to remove them.
Maybe LR have changed the type of nuts used or maybe the outer part of your nut has broken away?
Either way I'd be interested to know as I might replace the lockers on mine for standard nuts.
BTW has any one heard of full size spare wheels being stolen - a work colleague of mine reported that an RRS had one stolen in broad daylight in a supermarket car park!
Some say the glass is half full. Others that it is half empty. I say 'Are you drinking that?"

Have 4 x standard nuts to replace my lockers, find they can be difficult to use under ideal conditions never mind on a hill side when it's p**ing down! Besides, I use 17"ers on my S and no-one is gonna nick those!! They'd also have to have a mega jack to do so! Just got to get my car back to fit them!!! Big Cry Big Cry

I'm very interested to see some pics of what happened to this lock nut. I'm too lazy to go out and take one of mine off to look at it! Wink

yes long time ago . I posted my code type for the lock nut , the edited it to remove.Ron had in the meantime had scolded me Shocked for posting this but whilst scolding me Shocked had also quoted me with the lock nut type stated within the quote.Bodsy you then advised Ron to edit his post to remove the lock type nut that he quoted in my post earlier but which I edited to remove.

Make sense of that on a Monday morning Confused Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter
