Help - can’t get alternator off
Hi, as above, can’t get the alternator off my D4
Removed the fan and belt. Lifting some of the pipe work away and from underneath have undone all the bolts and it is loose(ish) in the engine bay. The battery cable is still attached and it seems like it’s this that is holding it in. Like I can’t get enough slack to pull it out and undo the wires at the back maybe? There is a little bracket that holds that cable and I have undone that but still won’t come out?!
Anyone done this please?

When I did mine there was no slack on the lead. You just need extensions and can get to the nut holding the lead on from underneath. It then comes out from above not underneath. Actually harder to get the nut back on when re fitting than it was to take off.
Good luck IID Tool

So do you think it is easier to undo that nut / cable when the alternator is still bolted on or when it’s loose?
Also does the plug on the back only have one wire ?

From memory the plug on the back just had one thin wire and I'm not sure it makes much difference to the removal of the nut holding the lead on weather the alternator is lose or not, but you wont get it free until the nut is of as there is no slack in the cable. Im sure i have read on here somewhere that removing the cable from the other end is potentially easier so it remains attached to the alternator.IID Tool

Managed to get it off in the end but with no idea how to get it back on.
In the end (and when it was daylight again!) that if you remove the hose (intercooler I think) on to this metal hose here.....
Working from underneath after removing the plastic cover, and undoing the two 8mm bolts holding the bracket means it can be moved out of the way in order to put the main cable on. I also made sure that prior to starting work I stuck it on the highest suspension setting and then put an axle stand under the chassis so it didn’t drop over time. Its time consuming and a bit of a pain to do but at least it’s possible. I took it off one night in a couple of hours, there was a parcel waiting for me from Advanced Factors (excellent service by the way) when I got home today and spent a couple of hours putting it back on. Was too late to put the battery back on tonight. I’ll do that tomorrow and hopefully it’ll all be good
